Is greasy hair an menopause thing?

Toorapid · 10/02/2021 14:40

I had terribly greasy hair as a teenager and have always liked it clean, wash it daily, but lately it feels greasy again by lunchtime, just like when I was a teen.

I'm 50 and keep thinking it must be time, but so far my cycle is as regular as clockwork

Watching with interest as similar is happening to me....I am washing my hair twice as much since recently going through Menopause.

TeaPiglet · 10/02/2021 16:11

It can be unfortunately, it's due to hormones

lollipoprainbow · 10/02/2021 16:12

Same is happening to me!

I'm sorry I wish I had better info for you, my advice is that wine helps. Doesn't stop the hormones but does stop you caring for a little bit lol or chocolate

Notonthestairs · 10/02/2021 16:18

It's happening to me too - I've tried washing less, more, different shampoos etc. It looks awful.

Have you tried a dry shampoo after styling? Mine's quite fine and greasy on the day after washing (but i tend to wash it as i wake up looking like a burst mattress most days so dry shampoo doesnt work on that)

torquewench · 10/02/2021 16:27

Oh, and HRT has made no difference...

HowQuicklyTwoAndTwenty890 · 10/02/2021 16:33

Oh I have quite the opposite experience. I used to have very oily hair and skin. Now both are very dry (although I still get pimples.)

I now wash my hair every second or third day and use dry shampoo between to freshen it up. But it is so dry the ends are splitting.

My hair has never been greasy and its bleached to bugger but I've noticed that the second day isnt great. It's taken me decades to stop myself washing it every day now I think I may have to start. Fresh hair is addictive!

Paranoidandroidmarvin1350 · 10/02/2021 17:44

Who knows. Everything of mine is wonky. When u research it everything is due to peri menopause. My eyes are really dry and I’m having to use eye drops. My periods go on for ever. Everything is wrong.
Sorry. Went off topic. I would imagine it is. Everything is.

SlackieBeaver · 10/02/2021 18:34

Mines definitely the opposite, used to have to wash every day, now it's every two or three days unless I've exercised. About the only benefit of the menopause!

SlackieBeaver · 10/02/2021 18:35

By the way username isn't another side effect of the menopause or at least I hope not ! Grin

Same here, I actually use argan oil in my hair now and I often wonder what my teenage self would have made of it!

Some wise advice thank you.

Anyone know about eyelash length. Mine are about half as long as they used to be!!

LorneSausage · 10/02/2021 18:51

My eyelashes are definitely shorter but a bonus for me is the much slower growth of body hair!

Ginfordinner · 10/02/2021 18:55

No, not for me. I'm well past it now (62), but the main issue now is thinning hair Sad
My eyelashes are pretty much the same though, but the worst thing is facial hair. My epilator gets a lot of use Grin

YES! And my once hairy arms are now hairless. Thank you @LorneSausage I feel a bit less perplexed / unnerved by it now.
