The Shawshank Redemption - Would you let your 14 year old watch it?

Im deliberating on it for this weekend as obviously it's a great film and I know he'd enjoy it. It's a 15 I believe

However there are some bits in it which I'm not sure are entirely suitable.

Anyway - would you be happy to let a young teen watch it? It's a while since I've seen it so it could be a lot tamer than I'm remembering

I would. I don’t remember anything particularly bad in it, great film.

Stompythedinosaur · 09/02/2021 19:44

I think the worst scene is the one where the guards beat the new inmate to death and leave him on the floor until morning. There's also rape featured.

My sense is it would be ok for most 14yos.

Ohalrightthen · 09/02/2021 19:44

Yes, i would. The parts about rape are implied not illustrated, and if he's old enough to understand the hints then he's old enough to watch the film.

And if he doesnt understand the hints then no harm no foul.

Oblomov21 · 09/02/2021 19:45

Yes I think it would be fine.

AllMyPrettyOnes · 09/02/2021 19:45

Definitely

user1487194234 · 09/02/2021 19:45

Absolutely
We watched it with extended family a year or so ago, DC ranged from 11 to 17
All enjoyed , no one traumatised

Angel2702 · 09/02/2021 19:46

Yes we watched it at school in year 9.

Tronkmanton · 09/02/2021 19:47

We watched it recently with DS14 and I felt uncomfortable in places - it’s much more violent than I remembered (I hadn’t seen it for 25 years tho!). DS wasn’t bothered but found it a bit boring!

Aquamarine1029 · 09/02/2021 19:48

Definitely would. Mine did.

I had no idea it was a 15, I've been thinking about rewatching it and had forgotten some of the darker parts. I always look up the IMDB parents guide as it is useful in breaking down why a film is a certain rating.

ALemonEntryDearWatson · 09/02/2021 20:24

Yes the rape scene is uncomfortable and I can't watch the violence scene but then, I'm a wuss about that sort of thing!

He enjoyed 'catch me if you can' (totally different I know!) so I was trying to think of films that have the same level of engrossment and o think this fits the bill

Yes DH and DS both love that film abs I'm sure DS would have been around 14 watching it first

Fascinationends · 09/02/2021 23:07

Mine saw it before 14 and really enjoyed it.

BashfulClam · 10/02/2021 00:13

The rape is implied but uncomfortable, there is a sex scene with his ex wife and her lover but it’s not totally graphic.

SquirtleSquad · 10/02/2021 11:03

Yes it's an excellent film!
