My non-Brit partner just asked me what they'd do about her funeral and I don't know. What would happen? Put her on ice til later?

Blimey the things that you think about during lockdown. A lovely thread about funerals to raise our spirits.

I personally think it would be fine, she'd have a small funeral in line with lockdown rules. No drama.

Chloemol · 09/02/2021 18:48

Quiet funeral followed by large memorial service when they can

ChairinSage · 09/02/2021 18:48

I think it would be the end of lockdown and funeral restrictions. Given their ages, she and Philip would die in quick succession, so for all that he is insistent on a no-fuss funeral there's no way the general public would stand for it for the monarch. She's been head of state for most people's living memory and it will be a big deal across the country. I remember the country lost its mind when Diana died so I don't think we could expect anything different.

This is assuming she's not already dead and it's a cover up. When was she last seen in public?

And to all those calling this morbid, this is a pragmatic conversation about an inevitable event, not a death wish on her...

MrsMackesy · 09/02/2021 18:49

HMQ is in rude health as I understand it - still pony riding, all her faculties intact etc - and has the best of healthcare on hand. I think she will go on for some years yet.

Silvercatowner · 09/02/2021 18:50

But we have an extra bank holiday next year for her jubilee wotsit. I'll be very pissed off if that doesn't happen...

tenredthings · 09/02/2021 18:52

They will never let her die. The monarchy will die with her. They probably have lots of look alikes ready to take her place !

EberhardtSmallcock · 09/02/2021 18:52

I don't think this is morbid at all. Old people die. This is the way of the world.

Reminds me of a conversation I had with my dad about the relative merits of coffins (wooden vs cardboard vs knitted).

I doubt that the Queen's death would unleash Diana-type mass hysteria, though. Those with hysterical tendencies are already occupied with Covid.

IndecentCakes · 09/02/2021 18:55

Because they are extraterrestrial lizard people, they will live longer, so no need to worry.

itsgettingwierd · 09/02/2021 18:56

It's not morbid.

It's a good point for discussion.

I'd be surprised if there was a media blackout.

I would imagine they would have military deployed to protect mass gatherings though.

Agree more likely Philip than HM but planning for lockdown funerals isn't a novel thing and it will have been done.

My mum has terminal cancer. She has a 15/30/ everybody can attend plan HmmGrin

Arobase · 09/02/2021 18:56

Quiet funeral, mahoosive memorial thing later.

itsgettingwierd · 09/02/2021 18:57

@TerrifiedandWorried

We will be told to stand on our doorsteps and clap.

I do know from a family member in the forces that they have been planning for a state funeral for a number of years. The route for the coffin is planned, laying in state security all thought about. But now Covid. So yes I've thought about it too, and I did wonder whether the death of Phillip would finish off a rather crap 2020 but he's still here. Said family member hasn't given anything away about what the Covid plans would be, but no doubt they're in place. They have to be given their ages.

Octane · 09/02/2021 18:57

@Jumpintothefire

She died in 2007 . It's a robot all along .
A robot all along or just since 2007?
SmednotaSmoo · 09/02/2021 19:00

I imagine this has been giving project London Bridge much to think about for months. However, I trust that crossover of civil service/royal family staff - dutiful, slavish, effective, if not entirely human - will have Made Significant Plans. And unlike our government, they’ll work.

A state funeral with no state will be interesting, but massively mark the change in tone for the monarchy and may not be the worst thing in the world.

They can’t not announce the change of reigns though, surely. People make oaths to the sovereign all the time...

(Not a royalist, but admiring of HMQ, particularly in comparison to her loyal government)

You know from a family member in the forces? It's also been widely known for decades. Talked about in the Press etc.
ArosGartref · 09/02/2021 19:06

Just chuck in her the sea, probably.

TheSpottedZebra · 09/02/2021 19:09

Btw, Philip's funeral plan is Forth Bridge, (iirc) and Charles' is Menai Bridge. Ie the Bridge code relates to their title. The Queen Mother was Tay Bridge.

EmbarrassingMama · 09/02/2021 19:10

She'd better not before that extra bank holiday in 2022.

TheSpottedZebra · 09/02/2021 19:11

It's not just the funeral plan, it's who is told, when, and how, and what happens then.
When does the easel come put at Buckingham palace, is it on twitter etc.

stampsurprise · 09/02/2021 19:11

The Queen will outlive us all Grin

Newchances · 09/02/2021 19:15

Oh what date is the bank hol next year?

CoronaIsWatching · 09/02/2021 19:19

@EmbarrassingMama

We'd presumably get an extra one anyway for Charles' coronation
fantasmasgoria1 · 09/02/2021 19:20

I doubt the country would be up in arms if the queen didn't have a state funeral. Its an abject waste of money in any case. They should have private funerals, weddings and everything else oh and pay for it themselves.

alwayshappensonnye · 09/02/2021 19:20

@zebra maybe so but I haven't read it. Perhaps the OP hasn't either. I'd never thought about it until he was telling me they had been practicing the route, military band etc. Not all of us read the press, but thanks for pointing that out Hmm

Alonelonelyloner · 09/02/2021 19:24

I've thought about the fact that they has this organised, but I was wondering about the whole Covid19 thing. It must be much more expensive or cheaper now (if they just do a televised send-off- which I'm all in favour of btw). Also then what about the coronation!!!????? Maybe that one can wait...
