Can anyone identify this book/film?

It's driving me crazy. I don't even know if I have read it or seen it! All I can remember is that at one point the narrator goes to the south of France to visit his or her mother - I think his - and she has been spending too much money, beyond their normal allowance and he wants to cut her off. The mother lives in a run down villa and gambles. I don't even know what century it is set in but it is really bugging me! Thanks.
