So you have registered your car to your new address, and you think that your ex might have got fake plates on a similar car so that you have to pay the fine? Where was your own car at the time of these reports? Where was the fake car?

dublingirl66 · 09/02/2021 11:54

No I don't think it was him

The car is Registered here with me

I keep getting fines for another car
Same make different colour

Have you reported to the police that your number plate has possibly been cloned?

You need to inform DVLA and the police if your plates have been cloned. They will be able to advise on everything.

dublingirl66 · 09/02/2021 11:57

About to do that today

So is this a thing?
People cloning number plates??

OP posts:
TillyTopper · 09/02/2021 11:58

Yes, number plate cloning is definitely a thing!

HollowTalk · 09/02/2021 11:58

It's obviously someone who's got a car with fake plates. Given what you've escaped from, doesn't it seem more likely it was your ex than someone who just randomly changed to your licence plate and started to park illegally? It wasn't happening before you left home, was it?

I know that you know it's a different car, but with a fake plate on it then it passes as yours, doesn't it? Who would want to do that to you?

dublingirl66 · 09/02/2021 12:00

Sorry clueless here

Had no idea

They send pics with the parking charge

It is dark blue in colour

Who knows my ex is likely for all sorts

But !!
These bloody fines are now on me !!!!
So I need to get a letter from the police

OP posts:
HollowTalk · 09/02/2021 12:16

You need to go to the police then and tell them that you left an abusive relationship and since then you've had these parking tickets for a car that isn't yours, but which has the same numberplate and that you think your ex might be doing this as pay back.

Where was that car parked when it got a fine? And where was yours at the time?

I assume your ex doesn't know your address, but if you have changed your address with your insurance or DVLA then any fines would automatically go to you.

If you didn't change your address with insurance/DVLA then I have no idea what's happening, sorry.

maxelly · 09/02/2021 12:29

Just report to the police, you don't need to accuse your ex unless you have some grounds for thinking it's him - there's every chance it's just a random scammer. We had this exact thing with a vehicle belonging to my late father, someone was getting parking and speeding fines in a town he'd never been to, after he had died and when the vehicle was sat in his garage awaiting dispersal of his estate Hmm - we only found out about it when we tried to sell the bike and it set off loads of alerts on the system for unpaid fines -stress!

I was nervous about calling the police as I thought they might somehow try and blame us or want loads of paperwork for the bike that we didn't have because my father's attitude to things like that was erm - cavalier - but the police were very helpful, issued a crime number without question and sorted it all out for me - I doubt they ever caught the person that did the cloning but there were no adverse consequences for us and we certainly didn't have to pay the fines...

dublingirl66 · 09/02/2021 13:01

So so helpful

Thank you

My car is at my new house

The fines are for a car parked 200 miles away
Different coloured car

Awful

You can enter your reg into dvla website and it’ll tell you the car make, model and colour on record. Take that to the police and use as evidence to challenge tickets if the car caught is a different colour

quicklybeingdrivenmad · 09/02/2021 13:26

It happens quite a lot more than people think, get it reported asap because the people who do the cloning usually do it to break some laws or commit crimes, my company car was cloned years ago (we were in America) we left it in long term parking at Heathrow, fleet department got notified by the police it had driven away from a petrol station not paying,a couple of days after we had left it by the time we got home it had been used in an armed robbery, ended up on way home from the airport, being forced to a stop on the motorway by armed police scariest thing ever.

Ilikewinter · 09/02/2021 13:33

This happened to both my DB and DM! DM got parking tickets, DB fake car was used in an armed robbery.
Please report it to the Police asap

AdobeWanKenobi · 09/02/2021 13:35

You've been cloned.

Moving forward get yourself a recognisable sticker and put it on the back of the car, this way you can prove going forward which is your vehicle.

Whatdoyoudowhendemocracyfails · 09/02/2021 13:42

You’re halfway there to getting it sorted, OP. Report to the police and get your reference number and then take that back to UKPC.

Here’s some guidance from Citizens Advice:-

“You might have got a parking ticket in the post because your car wasn’t parked correctly after it was stolen. Or your licence plate might have been copied and used on another car – known as ‘car cloning’.

“You’re not responsible for this ticket, so you should appeal.

“Write back to whoever contacted you about the parking offence. Their contact details will be on the notice or letter they sent you. Explain that the car was stolen or cloned when the offence happened.

“You might only find out that your licence plate has been cloned when you get the ticket in the post.

“You should report the cloning to the police and DVLA straight away.

“You'll have been given a crime reference number when you reported the theft to the police. If you report cloning to the police, they will also give you a reference number. Include the reference number in your appeal as this will prove that you weren’t driving the car when it was wrongly parked.

“Once you’ve proven you weren’t driving, the notice against you must be cancelled.

“Contact your nearest Citizens Advice if the ticket isn’t cancelled – they can help you get legal advice.”

www.citizensadvice.org.uk/law-and-courts/parking-tickets/appealing-parking-tickets/appealing-a-parking-ticket-when-someone-else-was-driving/

You might have legal cover with your insurance so if you get stuck you can call and ask them for help too - check your policy or give your insurers a call to ask if you don’t know.

This happened to my ex. Someone cloned his number plate and used it on a similar looking car. He had to report it to the police and the DVLA. It as a bit of a palava getting a crime number; I think he got passed from pillar to post a bit, but got one in the end.

He was advised the carry details of the crime number with him whenever he drove, in case the police stopped him for non payment of the fines this other driver (with the cloned number plate) kept racking up.

dublingirl66 · 09/02/2021 13:50

My gosh you guys are amazing

Thank you !!!!!!!!!

OP posts:
Dontknowmuchabouthistory · 09/02/2021 13:52

You aren't responsible for the fines. The photographs show it isn't your car and DVLA have a record of the vehicle associated with your registration number. You have proof the fine was incurred by someone with a similar- looking vehicle but a different vehicle, nevertheless.

I had this some years ago just after buying a new car which was bought up from another branch of the car dealership, over 100 miles away. I started getting fines for my registration number on a car in the area my car had been transferred from. I just wrote to the fine issuer and they withdrew the fines. (I think it likely someone at the dealership made up the plates because they knew the car was being transferred out of the area).

bloodywhitecat · 09/02/2021 14:03

It is a thing, my son-in-law's reg was cloned, they had the right colour, make and model the car was used for a series of armed robberies miles away from where he lived. The first he knew was when the police turned up at work to speak to him, he was able to prove he was nowhere near at the time and his car was on the forecourt where he worked and didn't leave. His car also had an EU badge on the plate where the cloned car didn't. The police will help you sort it.

boredwiththeoldname · 09/02/2021 14:03

I once had a telephone call in the middle of the night from the police in a different county about 100 miles away, asking me if I knew where my car was. Yes, I said, it's parked outside. They asked me to go and check, and it was.

All I can assume is that there was another car in their county with fake plates on it.

ScatteredMama82 · 09/02/2021 14:06

Yes it's a thing. My DH was on holiday in France with his car, when he got home he had a visit from the police for supposedly driving off without paying for fuel somewhere in England. Same make of car, someone had cloned the plates!

dublingirl66 · 09/02/2021 15:05

Shocking

You guys have been so helpful

We live in NI
PSNI
Wrote a short letter but said it needs to be pursued by the met police as the car was parked in London

Awful !!

I got a car parking fine sent to my old address. I have a new home address which is stated on my car insurance. My car was witten off due to road traffic accident and I have informed DVLA and because of that I was told that my road tax refund will be sent to the address on my DVLA, so when I checked my post from my previous address I have file of envelopes from Euro car parks ltd. with the same unpaid car park. The amount has gone up from £100 to £170.
Can anyone please help to explain if I need to pay the amount. Thanks a lot.
