What does the old woman say at 0.50?

As I child I assumed I just didn't know the word. But now I have a linguistics degree and I still can't work out what the fuck she's saying.

Help me!

She wants to be in conglomerates? something to do with stocks?

NuniaBeeswax · 09/02/2021 10:29

I want to be in conglomerates.

antygela · 09/02/2021 10:29

I want to be a mermaid?

Mustardbay · 09/02/2021 10:29

I agree, conglomerates.

OneMorePieceofCheese · 09/02/2021 10:30

Aha!

Thank you. I thought she was using an adjective (eg I'm inconglomerate) and I just couldn't work it out!

Still, quite obscure for an advert.

I want to be in conglomerates (in a West Country accent 😂)

jackieweaverhasauthorityhere · 09/02/2021 11:36

Sounded like 'I want to be in conglomerates'?

VivaDixie · 09/02/2021 11:41

I remember my mum explaining that to me at the time. 'I want to be in conglomerates'

Stocks and shares 👍

x2boys · 09/02/2021 11:42

I remember the i want to be a Tree🤣🤣

ShaunaTheSheep · 09/02/2021 11:44

Yes, I want to be a tree was a bit of a catchphrase Smile

DragonflyInn · 09/02/2021 11:46

Loving the idea that you got yourself a degree in linguistics purely to solve this childhood mystery!

MoodyMarshall · 09/02/2021 11:48

Yes it's conglomerates. She wants to take over the world. I think the ad was meant to show that different people had different financial aims, and it wasn't always who you expected.

(I think about this ad a lot Grin)

x2boys · 09/02/2021 11:53

Remember the other Prudential advert ,We wanna be together ,said in a Birmingham accent ?

ginandbearit · 09/02/2021 12:02

Haha yes and the look of frozen horror on the woman's face...a fave in our student nurse household at the time 😄

She's reading the share price page of the paper, it means that she wants to invest in the shares of conglomerate companies because she thinks they will give her a good return, nothing to do with taking over the world

Picturing the scene at OP's graduation now. She strides proudly on to the stage in her mortar board and gown. Her friends and family think she is happy because of her achievement, but that's only part of it.

As soon as she can, OP makes her excuses and rushes home. She takes down a solitary VHS from a high shelf and reverently unwraps the linen cloth surrounding it. A fine layer of dust hangs in the air, then settles.

OP settles down with a glass of fine port, and holds her breath. Her face lit only by the glow from the screen. It's time.,

51 seconds later, her smile fades but the tears won't come. It's gone too far for that.

After a sleepless night, she applies to do a PhD. This is only the beginning.

TryingNotToPanicOverCovid · 09/02/2021 14:44

I loved these adverts as a kid. And I remember our teacher saying "I want to be a tomato/tree" . Its funny how cultural memes change and younger people wouldnt know the reference yet everyone did at the time.

The tv quality too!! I mean we used to think tv was great yet look how much better quality it is now. I think tv now looks amazing, will my grandkids look at it and think "rubbish picture!?"

LApprentiSorcier · 09/02/2021 14:48

I want to be a princess!

OneMorePieceofCheese · 09/02/2021 16:30

@JesusInTheCabbageVan This is EXACTLY what happened! The linen-wrapped VHS and all.

I'm now the country's foremost expert in linguistics and all because a little old lady irritated me. Grin
