What does it mean when someone has a Red Square as part of their Twitter name?

There are loads of abbreviations and symbols that people put in their Twitter names that I don't know what they signify but I can sometimes work them out eventually.

I don't want to ask on Twitter because the last time I asked someone what a symbol meant it was something controversial. It started a Twitter-fight and everyone was asking me what side I was on!

It seems to be mostly women who have a Red Square so I decided that my first theory, that it means they are Communists, is probably wrong!

Supporting trans rights

It's a symbol gender critical women are using but I'm not actually sure why they chose the red square in particular.

ChonkyChook · 09/02/2021 06:20

Bait.

MoleSmokes · 10/02/2021 04:20

Thanks for the replies.

I'm guessing that at least one of the first two is intended as a joke and I won't venture an opinion on the third one.

I have since spotted several men sporting the Red Square so maybe I was wrong in thinking that it was something specific to women.

Or maybe it is used for different purposes by different people?

At least no one has suggested that it is something to do with Brexit, which is what got me into hot water when I asked on Twitter about something cryptic like this in a user name.

The red square meant gender critical feminist, but people like CursedE don't like that so have colonised it.

StCharlotte · 10/02/2021 08:53

And what about the spiders?

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 10/02/2021 09:19

I think the red square was meant like the 'red card' in football.

As for spiders I have no idea!

StCharlotte · 10/02/2021 09:22

I googled it (go me!). Turns out it's a reference to Lady Hale and her phenomenal spider brooch. Make sense as my cousin uses it and she's a lawyer.

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 10/02/2021 09:28

Thank you!

MoleSmokes · 11/02/2021 02:29

I haven't seen any spiders! Grin

Thanks for the link DailyMailHater and the further explanation Wrongsideofhistorymyarse - do either of you know why a red square? There were some "explanations" in that thread but they were a bit garbled and they might anyway be just guesses or taking the mickey.

It means Women said NO.

MoleSmokes · 12/02/2021 02:47

Thanks pumpkinbump! - Got it!

Red = Stop sign ?
Square = random shape ?

Can someone explain the spider please? My googling didn’t turn up an answer. What is the significance of the broach?

Mrsmorton · 12/02/2021 07:54

@Howmanysleepsnow looks like your google is broken. lady hale spider brooch

Howmanysleepsnow · 12/02/2021 08:02

Thanks. How does that translate to a Twitter profile? (I’m not normally this dim. Maybe I need more coffee, but I just don’t understand!)

Mrsmorton · 12/02/2021 19:16

@Howmanysleepsnow same way that people change their username on here to reflect current affairs. People use these things to reflect their affinity to people/movements/organisations
