We have a farm cat who usually sleeps outside in the barn. We had three until recently so they all kept each other company. However we had to have two put to sleep, they were very old with lots of ailments so we only have one. We really dont one to put him out in this weather (he's been sleeping all day in our nice warm kitchen. Problem is we don't have a litter tray or litter. Would just putting newspaper down besides him work? Wished I thought earlier and I could have had a trip to the shops. Its soo cold and it seems cruel.

Cardboard box and cut it down? Any soil or chick feed?

ComtesseDeSpair · 08/02/2021 21:14

If he’s used to going outdoors, he possibly won’t understand what to do with paper. A box of soil might be more familiar for him. The idea of going to collect said soil probably not very pleasant in this weather though.

If he’s not used to litter you might be best with soil, or maybe compost? Line a cardboard box with a bin liner or use a plastic box. Torn up newspaper might work.

Sand tray for kids?

Obviously you couldn't use it again for the kids 🤣

purpleme12 · 08/02/2021 21:16

And sand in it

sproutsnbacon · 08/02/2021 21:18

As others have said any type of tray and any soil, sand, or compost will do.
Do put newspaper under the tray incase he misses though! We had a mainly outdoor cat who would balance in the corner of the litter, shit on the newspaper then fire the litter everywhere in an attempt to cover it up. Mucky beast he was.

LagneyandCasey · 08/02/2021 21:24

Awwww yes keep him in the warm. He must be missing his mates Sad. Yes a box of compost or sand will be fine. Keep it far away from his food. He might hold it until morning though. Our girl has a litter box and is in every night but rarely uses it. I get up at 6am and let her out.

We definitely need a photo in exchange for our adviceSmile

I’d use soil too. I couldn’t put a cat out in this weather either it’s bloody freezing even if you are furry.

Theunamedcat · 08/02/2021 21:33

Won't he miow for a pee?

Chemenger · 09/02/2021 15:43

How did it go? Do you have a house cat now?

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 09/02/2021 15:47

Ordinary sheets of newspaper are fine, I use those on a plastic lid for my 20 year old cat because she can't cope with a litter tray any more. You don't need to tear them up.

Onedropbeat · 09/02/2021 15:49

In this weather our cat who toilets outside will ask to go outside and come straight back in once hes done. No need for litter tray

LagneyandCasey · 09/02/2021 15:57

I hope it went ok, op! Still waiting for a photo of the cosy warm cat Smile
