I am doing the Duolingo french course (something to occupy me in lockdown), they seem a bit obsessed with Mexico. European countries are hardly mentioned. I dont know if it is an American company, they use terms like 'restroom' a lot.

Papergirl1968 · 06/02/2021 14:13

I’m learning Welsh with Duolingo and they have done very strange sentences eg Does the cat have a harp? And Eleri has a new dragon. Confused

MrsRockAndRoll · 06/02/2021 18:35

👍

TaraR2020 · 06/02/2021 18:41

🤣

PinkSquash · 06/02/2021 18:43

Grin I must go into classics and reread that thread

Hippywannabe · 06/02/2021 18:43

I am doing Finnish and had the dragon sentence too!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 06/02/2021 18:46

Yes, Duolingo is aimed at the US-American learner.
The strange sentences make you take notice of the special grammatical features of your target language, you tend to remember them better that way.
There recently was a convention where they explained about this.

They use quotes from movies, too. And there are mostly volunteers working on the non main stream courses.

Deedeedocket · 06/02/2021 18:52

Can someone link to the thread?

Boopear · 06/02/2021 18:55

I'm doing Japanese and they are obsessed with same sex marriage. Every other phrase is "Mrs Honda's wife or my Brother's husband is Canadian". I never knew it was such a Japanese thing! They are also very keen on the restaurant next door being delicious...Confused

noodlezoodle · 06/02/2021 22:26

Ha, I'm learning Spanish on Duolingo and I don't think I've had this one before! They are unnaturally obsessed with eating apples and drinking milk though.

hocuspocusbitch · 07/02/2021 14:02

Can someone post the Mexican house thief thread for me please?

Dying to read it but can't find it!

Inextremis · 07/02/2021 14:05

I'm doing Irish - itheann na turtai cais - the turtles eat cheese :) Also, apparently women drink because men drink!

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/02/2021 14:09

I'm doing Spanish on duolingo too. I had a translation marked as wrong because I put holiday instead of vacation. It's very American. There are a lot of same sex relationships and a man who said his name was Julia. I like the Goth woman, though, she sounds really fed up.

QueenOfLabradors · 07/02/2021 14:09

Mexican House Thief is annoying to find because it's a story by a contributor on a more general thread so really difficult to search for. Someone who can remember the title will be along soon though! @hocuspocusbitch

gamerchick · 07/02/2021 14:10

I think Mexican house thief was on this thread. Amongst other CF stuff?

SilverOtter · 07/02/2021 14:22

I'm learning Norwegian with Duolingo and one of the sentences I got was "The wolf is not eating her."

I can totally see me needing to use that while holidaying in Norway 🤣🤣🤣

AlfonsoTheSensible · 07/02/2021 14:34

I inherited a Berlitz phrase book from my grandfather. One of the phrases was "May I have permission to marry your sister?"

SadderThanEeyore · 07/02/2021 14:42

@CaptainMyCaptain click on the flag to report your answer as correct and they will update from that. It happens a lot as you work your way through, the more reports they get the better the understanding of British English it develops

I imagine you would preface it with No, no, it’s fine
PerpendicularVincent · 07/02/2021 14:49

I'm learning Danish and they're obsessed with groups of people eating apples.

Hoppinggreen · 07/02/2021 14:51

Has anyone ever gone abroad and asked where the library is?

amusedbush · 07/02/2021 15:08

I had this one while practicing my French. I don’t know who ‘he’ is but Duo is a bit judgey Grin
