Just gone to print something, printer is left on and Was used yesterday. Saying today "printer offline" I'm going round in circles trying to work out what on earth to do to get it to be "online". I just can't make sense of it

Can anyone help?

I assume you have done the obvious "turn it off and on again"?

SoupDragon · 06/02/2021 13:59

Failing that, do you have the HP printer utility installed on your computer? Does that offer any suggestions?

Mine sometimes can't be found as an air printer but turning it off and on usually sorts that 😂

UncomfortableSilence · 06/02/2021 14:02

This happened to ours yesterday, we had to uninstall it on the laptop then re install it, as you do that the printer printed out a code that comes up as a prompt on the laptop that you have 5 minutes to enter. I had to do this 3 times for some reason at which point DD had given up and wrote her work out Grin But it did work eventually.

hauntedvagina · 06/02/2021 14:03

Usually I turn off and on again what I'm trying to print from, ie, turn off laptop and then it usually starts printing.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 06/02/2021 14:12

Mine does that all the time, I hit the x on the display to wake it up, then keep hitting find printer until the fucker wakes up. My record is 25 minutes of hitting find printer until it found the bloody thing!!

Ours does this, sometimes if my laptop has restarted it loses the port (or something technical like that I looked it up once) - Google hp print and scan doctor - download and run that, somehow it magically reconnects the port. Weirdly this only ever happens when I really need to print something, and never when my children want to print reams of StarWars pictures...

Things to try because they sometimes work:
Wifi off and on again
Printer off and on again
Run the troubleshooter for the printer (on windows laptop, settings, devices, printers, select printer, troubleshooter)
Sometimes a different device can print

Things that haven't worked:
Shouting and swearing at it
Drinking wine

DH has made our printer much happier by plugging it straight into the socket, and not using an extender.

Howmanysleepsnow · 06/02/2021 14:23

Do you have the hp smart app? Mine prints via that when I can’t find it as an air printer.

pinesofrome · 06/02/2021 14:24

I find the quickest way to get it back online is to remove the printer in Settings/Devices/Printers & Scanners and then add it again. This works every time for me but can't guarantee it'll work for anyone else! Otherwise call HP on 0207 660 0596 - we've found them really helpful. Good luck!

ScrapThatThen · 06/02/2021 14:29

All of the above! Plus when I changed my router it wouldn't find it until I changed its name Hmm stupid temperamental thing.

Ch3rish · 06/02/2021 14:32

Try the hp printer doctor, or some name like that, it checks everything and updates if necessary, it fixed my printer when I was tearing my hair out with it not working

PawPawNoodle · 06/02/2021 14:39

Mine does this sometimes - open task manager, go to services, find spooler, right click and restart.

morninglive · 06/02/2021 15:04

HP doctor /troubleshooter works well

ImFree2doasiwant · 06/02/2021 21:02

Well this has made me feel better. I can confirm that swearing/muttering/name calling didn't help. I was quite close to throwing it out of the window but after a bit more swearing thought that might not help either.

I did indeed switch it off and on again.

It kept printing a sheet which told me it was offline. Which I knew. And to open HP smart app, which I did, which told me it was offline, which I knew. No obvious way to get it "online" apart from uninstalling and reinstalling.

I'm not technologically minded but also not a complete dunce, yet it seems ridiculously hard to work out. I'm glad it's not just me!

Mine does this occasionally. What has worked for me is the following sequence:

Click 'print'
Message comes up 'printer offline'
Groan, then click 'print' again just to check
Swear (under my breath as homeschooling does not include teaching my kids to curse...yet)
Click 'print' 5 times in quick succession
Choose one of the following actions depending on how stressful the homeschooling has been and how much coffee I've had -

  • wi-fi off and on again, click 'print'
  • printer off and on again, click 'print'
  • threaten to smack the printer off the wall
  • smack the printer off the wall
  • smack my head off the wall
  • give up and get a coffee muttering about why school need a print out of yet another "cheerful thoughts for the week" diary
  • think cheerful thoughts about smacking the printer off the wall
  • spend an hour getting the kids to draw their cheerful thoughts onto a plain bit of paper
  • upload cheerful thoughts onto Seesaw and just finish with the last page as the printer suddenly comes back from the dead and spews out 17 duplicates of the page I had tried to print
  • try to print my work schedule and discover the printer is out of ink
WeAreNewHere79 · 06/02/2021 22:25

What works with my infuriating HP printer is to:

Go to 'Services'
Click on 'print spooler'
Right click and select 'stop'
Wait for it to stop
Right click and select 'start'

That usually kickstarts the printer.

Good luck!

User27aw · 06/02/2021 22:30

Are you using the cable? Sometimes mine is fine without and sometimes need to connect printer to laptop with cable

DotBall · 06/02/2021 22:44

I will never have another HP printer once this one has died. Very temperamental and it a big workhorse. Will probably go back to Canon, which never missed a beat for all the years we had it.

Blancsav · 06/02/2021 23:03

Our HP printer does this all the time. Its brand new but the last one was the same. I usually uninstall it then add it again but will try the hp doctor next time.

It's ok at printing 1-2 pages but is really poor at printing bigger docs with say 5+ pages, it will manage a few pages, then stops, then restarts right from the start so I end up with multiple of the same pages..... To avoid that I have to set it to print a range of page numbers and print off in chunks. Anyone else found this?

Floridaflipflops · 06/02/2021 23:05

I bloody rue the day I bought mine. It won’t recognise photo paper unless I send it from my phone app and hate the factoid have to pay a monthly fee for bloody ink I don’t use it they turn it off Shock
