Self Medicating With Food...Diabetes, Support?

73kittycat73 · 04/02/2021 19:19

Hi, I've tried to word/start writing this a few times, so I hope it comes out OK...But, today I have finally realized that I eat junk/sweet food to self medicate.
I have type 2 diabetes and have been 'getting away' with it for a while, but I'm starting to feel the effects of eating sweet food. If I eat chocolate before bed for example, I get terrible cramps in (Mainly my left) calf. Recently I have cut down on chocolate as it was making me feel like crap after eating it. I take depression and anxiety tablets and they make me tired so I thought it was them. However I have really noticed recently that eating it makes me so wiped out afterwards.
Today I was bored so ate a bit of cheesecake. Boy did I feel like shit afterwards. I was still feeling a bit rubbish a few hours later so I decided to dig out the old blood sugar testing kit. My blood sugars were17. In the dangerous category. (A non diabetic person should be between 7.1 to 10.0). It has given me a shake, and a wake up call.
I went to my Sainsburys delivery (Due Sunday.) and have taken all the sweet things out, including Pepsi Max. I drink 2ltrs of the stuff a day (I get 'cotton wool' mouth from the medications I take for depression/anxiety and just water does nothing.). I have read conflicting articles on whether Pepsi Max spikes your insulin so have taken them out my list too. I tried finding a decent drink that wasn't full of sugar or artificial sweeteners, I couldn't find any! So I have ordered some fizzy water and orange squash (With sweeteners.) to have it very diluted for some flavour.
However, like I said, it's only just clicked that I self medicate with food (Sweet stuff being the most.). I know I'll be back to craving even later tonight, or definitely tomorrow, so I was wondering if anybody would like to join me on cutting down on junk food. We could come on when we are craving, or just for some support generally. If you're doing it to loose weight that's fine too.
I hope I haven't gone on...I just wanted to be honest (With myself too.) and start a new, healthier, way of eating.

Good news on the weigh in @73kittycat73! And I hope the weather is good for your mum’s celebrations! The storms seem to have passed us by and the weather has been glorious!!

@Hermie12 hello! Sorry to hear you’ve lost your way. Hopefully you’ll get back on track soon xxx

Hermie12 · 18/06/2021 21:12

Thanks @PaperMonster I thought the accountability of posting would help keep me focussed and hopefully I can offer moral support to everyone too

73kittycat73 · 18/06/2021 21:34

Ooh, I hope it was nice WreckTangled. Smile Because not everyone likes sponge cake (Side eyeing you weird niece. ;) ) we are having a cheesecake, rocky road. I think I might have a small slice. Grin
Thank you PaperMonster. Smile It's nice you had some good weather. We have a 50% chance of rain so far for Sunday. We have a gazebo so hopefully if it does rain, it won't be too heavy and we can shelter under there.
Hi Hermie12, welcome aboard. Smile All the 'good stuff' is so hard to resist isn't it?! Why does it have to be so tasty?! Grin I wish you well with your diet changes. Flowers

@73kittycat73 I shall keep my fingers crossed that the rain stays away for you! The forecast storms just never arrived here!

I’ve done nine miles pottering about the village today, so that’s good! And a bit of a stroll in the local market town this evening taking my daughter and a friend to play. Am very tired tonight!!

73kittycat73 · 19/06/2021 10:59

Thank you! It's not supposed to rain today but it looks very overcast...Confused We need to go to the shop see.
Well done on all the 'pottering.' Smile Hope you managed to get a good nights sleep and aren't so tired today?

Morning ladies, I hope you have a good day. I've decided to focus today on eating when I actually get the hungry feeling rather than just because I can! Hoping it stays dry so I can get in a walk later!

PaperMonster · 19/06/2021 11:26

@Hermie12 - that’s the way to go! Hope you manage to get a walk in!

@73kittycat73 - I had a cracking night’s sleep thanks! Daughter has a friend over and I woke up a couple of times and checked whether they were asleep (of course they weren’t!! 3am they reckon they dropped off!!) and I had fabulous dreams!! But I reckon I need a nap this afternoon still!!!

73kittycat73 · 19/06/2021 12:43

Hi Hermie12. Smile I hope you manage to go on your walk and have fun doing it. I hope you have a good day too. Smile
Ooh, glad you got a good night then PaperMonster. Smile It's always nice to have good dreams. Grin Enjoy your afternoon nap!
I bought my first Christmas item this year today. A Christmas planner and some tree decorations from Amazon. Xmas Grin I'm usually a Christmas nut and hang out on the Christmas boards (Which is how I found MN and joined because of the Xmas board.) and other Xmas forums. This year I hadn't been into it so much but the feeling is creeping back. They have Xmas bits on the craft channel, Aldi are doing a Junemass and they are posting again on Christmas UK
I hope I haven't upset anyone by mentioning the 'C' word! Xmas Grin

BorderlineHappy · 19/06/2021 20:01

I've been buying ribbon for the wrapping paper I haven't got yet, for the Christmas presents I haven't got yet. Grin

Hello everyone. Smile I hope you've all had a good day? My diet went out the window today. Grin Had our little gathering inside in the end. Was really nice for the family to be together, first time in over two years. Went to tidy up afterwards and not one, but two, confetti filled balloons popped on me. Spent ages picking the darn stuff up! lol

I'm just eating the last of my birthday chocolate so I can start again tomorrow. Its Lindt so not particularly high carb but I want it gone.

PaperMonster · 20/06/2021 19:47

Oh I’m glad to hear you had your get together @73kittycat73! I best you with Christmas presents - bought one over half term on hols!! I am never this early normally, but it was Christmas related and in a sale!!

@WreckTangled enjoy the last of that chocolate!

@BorderlineHappy was today tattoo day? How’ve your got on? What have you had done?

I’ve not done too much today - arm is throbbing. Just watched tv and then gone to church.

73kittycat73 · 20/06/2021 20:04

Ooh, lucky you WreckTangled. Grin I know what you mean about wanting it gone though. Then you can't be tempted later right? Good luck getting back on it tomorrow. Smile
Hi PaperMonster. Smile Darn it, you beat me to it! Grin If it was in a sale, it would be silly not to though, wouldn't it? Xmas Grin
I'm sorry to hear about your arm. I hope it gives you some release soon. Flowers
Yes, BorderlineHappy I hope everything went well today? Hopefully your not in to much pain either!

@73kittycat73 glad you had a lovely family day. Me too, it was so lovely to have a the family together again, I can’t remember the last time . Although I ate a few naughties on the whole I was quite pleased as previously I’d have probably used a day like today to go mad on the crisps, desserts and chocolate. I feel like stopping at 2 Lindt balls was a major win !
Hope your arm is feeling better soon @PaperMonster

73kittycat73 · 20/06/2021 22:54

Thanks Hermie12. Smile Glad you had a good day, company and food wise, too. I must admit, I only had one bag of crisps too (Haven't had any for weeks.). I did also have three mini samosas, mini hash browns, and cheesecake too though. Grin Then when I came in for tea had about four Fibre One bars. Blush Just two Lindt balls was amazing! Well done! You did well there @Hermie12 as did you @73kittycat73!! Thanks for the comments re arm - goodness knows when it will feel better. Awaiting appointment to get a referral for MRI/Cortisone shot - so more waiting!! Beyond fed up with it. Got another redundancy meeting today too.

73kittycat73 · 21/06/2021 11:25

Aww, sorry to hear about your meeting, I hope it goes really well for you. (((hugs))) Lets hope your Cortisone shoot hurries up too! Not a good Monday for you. Flowers I really hope your day improves.
I binged again this morning. Couldn't sleep and was up reading a magazine at 3am and pigging out. (Take a Brakes Fate And Fortune. Got a bit spooked out too! Grin ) I'm going to take my bars and apart from my daily allowance, take them out of the flat. I hope it works!
Hope everyone is doing OK and having a good day/weigh-in?

Well I survived 🤣,pretty happy with it.
Yes I'm a huge Madonna fan and I have Madame X tattooed on my inner wrist.
I have about 23 tattoos so far.

BorderlineHappy · 21/06/2021 14:19

@73kittycat73 ah I'm glad you enjoyed your gathering.Whats a few extra calories between friends.
@WreckTangled hope you manage to get your shop and you're being treated fairly regarding your redundancy.

I wasn't to bad over the weekend, ended up having fried rice and curry sauce from the Chinese last night.

73kittycat73 · 21/06/2021 17:34

ooh, that Chinese sounds nice. Smile I haven't had anything curry flavoured for ages, because of not having rice. I've chickened out of trying cauliflower rice as all the reviews said it smelt and tasted funny.
Are all your tattoos of Madonna? Did it take long to do? They do say that once you get started you get addicted! Grin
