Self Medicating With Food...Diabetes, Support?

73kittycat73 · 04/02/2021 19:19

Hi, I've tried to word/start writing this a few times, so I hope it comes out OK...But, today I have finally realized that I eat junk/sweet food to self medicate.
I have type 2 diabetes and have been 'getting away' with it for a while, but I'm starting to feel the effects of eating sweet food. If I eat chocolate before bed for example, I get terrible cramps in (Mainly my left) calf. Recently I have cut down on chocolate as it was making me feel like crap after eating it. I take depression and anxiety tablets and they make me tired so I thought it was them. However I have really noticed recently that eating it makes me so wiped out afterwards.
Today I was bored so ate a bit of cheesecake. Boy did I feel like shit afterwards. I was still feeling a bit rubbish a few hours later so I decided to dig out the old blood sugar testing kit. My blood sugars were17. In the dangerous category. (A non diabetic person should be between 7.1 to 10.0). It has given me a shake, and a wake up call.
I went to my Sainsburys delivery (Due Sunday.) and have taken all the sweet things out, including Pepsi Max. I drink 2ltrs of the stuff a day (I get 'cotton wool' mouth from the medications I take for depression/anxiety and just water does nothing.). I have read conflicting articles on whether Pepsi Max spikes your insulin so have taken them out my list too. I tried finding a decent drink that wasn't full of sugar or artificial sweeteners, I couldn't find any! So I have ordered some fizzy water and orange squash (With sweeteners.) to have it very diluted for some flavour.
However, like I said, it's only just clicked that I self medicate with food (Sweet stuff being the most.). I know I'll be back to craving even later tonight, or definitely tomorrow, so I was wondering if anybody would like to join me on cutting down on junk food. We could come on when we are craving, or just for some support generally. If you're doing it to loose weight that's fine too.
I hope I haven't gone on...I just wanted to be honest (With myself too.) and start a new, healthier, way of eating.

Well done on that walk Papper! Definitely on it today, yes. Star I did get to sleep about an hour later in the end. I was worried I would be tired at yoga and not be able to do it, but I did. Grin It was mainly on the mat tonight so did a lot better. I've just come across balancing exercise video on Youtube. It's a 14 day challenge. I'm going to try it. I don't know if it'll be useful for anyone else? I can recommend her workouts too. Although it says for over 50s, I find a lot of her videos good.
Aww, glad you had such a lovely weekend away WreckTangled. Smile It's been very warm and sunny here today too again. (Didn't go out in the sun, my arms were hurting from being burnt.) Supposed to change to thunderstorms on Thursday. Sad
Happy Birthday for tomorrow! I hope you have a wonderful day! Star Glitterball Cake Flowers

How did you find the video PaperMonster? I definitely need improvement. Grin Hopefully I'll stick at it and improve. Smile I just tried doing her 10 minute HIT workout. Got to about 8 minutes then had to stop! Still, if I keep at it, it will get better.
Hope everyone is enjoying the sun today. Smile Have a lovely day all.

🍹🎂 Happy Birthday @WreckTangled have a gorgeous day

PaperMonster · 15/06/2021 14:43

@73kittycat73 too much arm work [confusedHmm. I could do the catching ball thing with my right arm though!! And my balance seems to be ok, despite the dodgy arm!! Quite impressed!!

PaperMonster · 15/06/2021 14:45

I think balance might be ok cos I’ve had to do so many exercises for my hip. I used to wait for students and stand on one leg!!

73kittycat73 · 15/06/2021 20:30

Well done PaperMonster! I am shocking at it. Grin I have just done it again today though and have slightly improved.
Ordered a protein shake with my shopping today (I don't get nearly enough in my usual diet.). It was a chocolate flavour vegan one. My goodness it was rank! lol It was powdery and all. I just necked it down. I must admit though, I didn't feel hungry or shaky at all. I felt 'satisfied.' All day too. Am going to have another one tomorrow. I will be necking it again!
Was given a good idea from my therapist today too. We were talking about my binges. He asked what started my healthier eating and I explained when I took my BS after feeling shocking (And started this thread.). He suggested that if I binge again, to take my BS afterwards to shock me into not doing it again. I thought that was a really good idea.
I hope you are all having a great day. Smile

Did the balances again. Think I'm improving.
I hope you all stay cool today, it's supposed to be the hottest day of the year here! They've also predicted thunder storms from 8pm. I don't leave yoga 'till 8.30pm. Gulp! Shock
I hope you all have a wonderful day and achieve any goals you set. Smile

Lost another 3 lb this week, which is surprising as I was slacking off.
But did drink loads more water this week and didn't have any alcohol.

73kittycat73 · 16/06/2021 18:52

Well done and congrats BorderlineHappy! Star That's really good. Smile
Does anybody have any tips for mixing protein powder? I whisk and whisk but it still stays lumpy. Did neck it down again today, must admit, it tasted slightly better.

@73kittycat73 put it in nutri bullet if you have one

73kittycat73 · 16/06/2021 19:15

I don't unfortunately. Thanks for the tip anyway. Smile Off to yoga now, and the sky doesn't look to gray! Still warm though too.

Well done @BorderlineHappy - you’re doing well!

Hope you don’t get caught in a storm @73kittycat73! We’re due them tomorrow.

Nothing much to report here - been and had my HBA1C done and have a review meeting on Monday.

BorderlineHappy · 16/06/2021 20:12

Things not to do. 😂
Dont use the skinny barista gingerbread flavouring on your powdered peanut butter.Tastes like the smell of hospital

@PaperMonster hope your review goes well.
And @73kittycat73 enjoy your yoga.

PaperMonster · 16/06/2021 20:48

@BorderlineHappy eeeuw, that sounds disgusting! And thanks - I think my numbers will have increased despite all my walking. I let myself have the odd piece of garlic bread, or slice of my OH’s divine homemade brown bread, so am not v hopeful! I think I need to start testing again!!

73kittycat73 · 16/06/2021 21:43

Thank you both. Was raining slightly when I left but it's only 5 mins down the road so didn't get to wet.
Good luck for Monday, I hope you get a good reading. Star
That does sound quite yuck BorderlineHappy. Grin

So I ordered some new electronic scales from Argos for delivery today (Fancy ones that tell you %of body fat, water, muscle, bmi, bmr.). My diet has been disastrous these last week and a half. I usually weight myself monthly, but think I need the incentive of weekly (That or scare my ass into losing!). I'm going to weigh myself on the old scales tomorrow morning (Dial type ones, not very good for small losses.) and then jump on the new ones and go from there. I doubt it but I really really would have liked to get to 11st 13. I'm desperate to get down to that weight bracket. I don't think I will with the way I've been eating.
Hope you are all OK, and on track? We didn't get any thunder in the end.
Oh yeah, managed a whole 10 minute HIIT workout this morning! (By the same lady that does the balancing exercises above.)

OP posts:
73kittycat73 · 18/06/2021 10:58

Ok, weighed in, am pleased. Smile 11st 13lb on usual scale, and 11st 10lbs on new scale. Grin I will carry on with the new scale now. I haven't set it up right yet. It was a bit confusing first thing this morning! lol.
Hope you are all ok?

WreckTangled · 18/06/2021 11:02

Great weigh in!

I'm ok, went to the gym this morning and just got back from food shopping. Weather is horrendous and lots of flooding appearing on the roads. Might have a nap later Grin

73kittycat73 · 18/06/2021 18:21

Thank you! Next goal is to lose 3lb, then I'll be 11.7 stone exactly. Smile
Oh, hope you have a nice nap. It has been poring down again here too. I hope it's nice for Sunday. We are throwing a small birthday party for my mum. (Her BDay is in Feb, but she was in hospital then.) How did yours go? I hope you had a lovely time. :)

73kittycat73 · 18/06/2021 19:37

No but dd did for her birthday (two days after mine). My very clever friend made it so I had a slice!

Hermie12 · 18/06/2021 20:53

Hi, just wanted to check in here as I’ve definitely been eating too much sugar / carbs as my hba1c has gone up since my last review. I think it’s complacency as I’ve been really active and I’m a healthy weight so being sensible has gone out of the window. Have just started being more careful with carbs and trying to banish my sugar addiction. Been there before and know I can do it but my willpower has been rubbish lately !
