Birthday meal - what's nicest? Please help me decide.

It's my birthday next week, and I intend to celebrate it with two evenings of eating and drinking and making merry! Well, one evening of drinking cocktails and another evening of eating.

I'm very fortunate in that I have my lovely DH to share it with me. And a grumpy 18 year old DS who may join in at some point Grin.

What shall I have ? I'm thinking either:

Chinese takeaway
Indian takeaway
Domino's pizza
Fish and chips (which may get soggy as the chip shop is some distance away but I do love them)
Cheese fondue
DH cooks something (could be delicious or terrible, he has form for both)

Which would you rather have? I'll go with whatever the majority decides!

If it were me: I'd get Dh to cook steak & would then decide I want dauphinois on the side, which I'd end up making Grin. Or an Indian.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 04/02/2021 16:58

Love your username btw!

ShowOfHands · 04/02/2021 17:01

I like Indian or Chinese so one of those. Maybe Indian I think and go all out. Lots of different sides, poppadoms, chutneys etc to try.

greensnail · 04/02/2021 17:03

For my birthday recently we had Chinese takeaway, it wouldn't normally be my favourite but I just fancied it on the day and it was sooo good!

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 04/02/2021 17:04

Fish and chips. It's my birthday next week too so I think my vote should be counted twice Grin.

Notanorthadontist · 04/02/2021 17:06

Indian or Thai

toolazytothinkofausername · 04/02/2021 17:06

Supermarkets are doing meal deals for Valentine's Day. Perhaps you can have one of them one evening.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 04/02/2021 17:07

Hmm.....I wouldn't ask my own dh to cook as I cook better than him. We get Chinese fairly regularly, and the kids like pizza so we would save that for a family night.

I like my fish and chips best wrapped open at the seaside. And Indians always makes me ultra bloated (because I gorge on naan).

The cheese fondue sounds good - I'd go full on cheeseboard/charcuterie. Little bit of crusty bread and oil, olives etc.

Alternatively, some restaurants are doing dine at home options if you have a local one you want to "go back" to.

barberousbarbara · 04/02/2021 17:11

It's my birthday this weekend. I want fish and chips. My plan is to stick them in a hot oven for a few minutes to crisp them up once they arrive. I really looking forward to them.

Enjoy your birthday and what ever food you decide on.

Leah2005 · 04/02/2021 17:15

Cheese fondue. It's the only thing on your list I haven't already had during lockdown. Feels a bit more luxurious. Possibly followed by chocolate fondue with strawberries

BasiliskStare · 04/02/2021 17:15

Ha ha ha - I would rule out Domino pizza because I think they are terrible - but if you like it then - do it.

If you love Fish and chips get those and can you shove them in the oven to crisp up - sorry - not very good at that - does that work. ?

Personally I would want DH to cook steak and chips , onions mushrooms - not terribly hard.

Cheese Fondue sounds celebratory but given I have not had one for about 15 years - not sure i'd be great at doing it

Whatever you have I hope you have a lovely evening ( or indeed 2) Grin Flowers @FleetwoodRaincoat

FleetwoodRaincoat · 05/02/2021 12:41

Thanks everyone. I'm veering towards cheese fondue, but that depends on whether the online shop delivers all the right cheese, so I might have to save that for another day.
Otherwise it's pretty much a tie between fish and chips and Indian - I'm not keen on steak, so that's not an option for me.

@BernardsarenotalwaysSaints
Thanks. I like to think of it as my tribute band name.

Happy birthday to @MacavityTheDentistsCat
and @barberousbarbara. Hope you both have a lovely day.

What about one of the valentine's meal dine in offers? The m&s one is usually nice.

SimplyRadishing · 05/02/2021 12:44

Cheese fondue

DH to clean up the mess post meal

AdoptedBumpkin · 05/02/2021 12:45

I would go for Chinese. If your DH is unpredictable in the kitchen then I wouldn't take the risk.

SionnachRua · 05/02/2021 12:46

Indian all day every day!

orangenasturtium · 05/02/2021 12:55

If it's going to be 2 nights of making merry... Cheese fondue, a plate of charcuterie and olives sound like the perfect accompaniment to cocktails. You could always buy a brie or camembert to bake as a back up plan. Then have an Indian or fish and chips on day 2!

mindutopia · 05/02/2021 13:02

Cheese fondue and your dh cooking a nice dinner.

I'm not a massive fan of takeaway and always find it's more disappointing than I expect.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/02/2021 13:03

I'd make a massive pile of garlic prawns and eat it with crusty bread to mop up the sauce and a bottle of cava.

Plus some one of the Valentine's meal deals on the other day, because I'm a sucker for an M&S meal deal, even though I know that the 'before' prices on all the separate bits are completely made up.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/02/2021 13:05

Oh, I'd probably get afternoon tea delivered over the weekend too. Loads of places are doing this, including Morrisons, although there's is takeaway, but for £10 you get enough that is too much for one, but not quite enough for two, so in your case, I'd get two of them between the three of you. Or just buy the bits in store and make it up yourself. Their clotted cream square scones are probably the best you can buy in supermarkets.

mootymoo · 05/02/2021 13:13

I would suggest your dp goes and buys one of those meal for two packages at the supermarket- steak and potatoes dauphinois with salad, dessert and wine plus candles, chocolates and flowers one night, and cocktails and takeaway/party freezer food the other (invite 18 year old to that one Grin)

73kittycat73 · 05/02/2021 13:43

Fish and chips!!! Grin Also, if anybody's cooking, I'll have a roast dinner please.

Spied · 05/02/2021 13:48

Fish and chips
