Any greyhound owners here?

We don’t know any others in real life! I’m struggling today so I thought I’d do a light hearted post about greyhounds and how wonderfully quirky they are :)

We adopted our handsome boy in august after wanting one for years. We lost our beloved schnauzer in January last year and decided in August the time was right. We went to the kennels and he was one of three greyhounds we walked. He was the second hound we walked and I knew within minutes he was the one for me Smile He has truly healed my heart.

I love the bear grunt noises he makes when he’s asleep (even at 3am). I love his goofy teef and his crooked tail and the way his paws smell like popcorn. I love that he’s never lived in a house before let alone lived with children, yet he snuggles up to my kids like a big teddy. I love that he is Shadow Dog and never leaves my side (even when I’m tripping over him while trying to cook the dinner).

I can’t wait for when restrictions are lifted a bit and my local greyhound charity can resume their monthly walks so he can have some buddies. And so I can book the new dog exercise field and let him run til his heart is content. I can thank him for the fact I’m getting fake grass laid in spring (he has turned our back garden into Glastonbury after a very wet weekend) Grin

Would love to hear about your hounds and how you found them!

What a lovely post op.

My mum has two rescue greyhounds. She adores them (probably more than her children and grandchildren Grin). They've also churned up her lawn, are total muppets but very loveable. It is amazing how quickly they adapt to living in houses.

These are the third and fourth ones my mum has had. She apparently chose greyhounds because I once told a story about how hard they are to re-home as people assume they need alot of exercise.

Electrocute1980 · 04/02/2021 15:33

Awww @Alm1986 they do that to you - the kids often joke I love him more than I love them Grin

Yes they are total muppets - the pure joy he gets from flinging a tennis ball around in the garden or one of his cuddly toys is just adorable 🥰

It is such a common misconception that they need loads of exercise when really they are experts in being lounge lizards haha. He’s my 40mph couch potato :)

My parents do. They had only ever had mongrels previously. They went to Dogs Trust and came home with a rescue greyhound. He was the most loving gentle crazy giant. He was so lovely with my children. He sadly died unexpectedly last year very young.

They hated an empty house and decided to get another one. He is completely different to the other one. He is slightly unhinged. He has wrecked the garden digging numerous holes. He ripped his new £50 bed the day the bought it. He steals food at any opportunity. He tries to pull them over if he sees a cat. They completely worship him even though he has turned their life upside down.

I love greyhounds. And all dogs tbf.

We plan to rehome one once we are older.

We couldn't now as we have 2 small dogs.

Electrocute1980 · 04/02/2021 16:13

@Rillington oh that’s sad your parents lost their last greyhound at an early age. That must have been heartbreaking.

Lol at slightly unhinged 🙈 Our boy tried to be a good thief when he first arrived but I’ve managed to curb that - unless it’s a banana. Bananas are apparently fair game haha 😆

@1FootInTheRave that’s why we didn’t rehome one before - our little schnauzer was very highly strung and would not have coped with another dog sharing his space!

We had greyhound rescues, lovely dogs, ours were very gentle.

We never let them off the leash though, their recall was terrible, and we were sure if they set off after a squirrel or rabbit we'd never see them again.

Thanks, my boy (on the right) is super chilled now but was horribly abused so we needed to get our second one to bring him out his shell. He wouldn’t even walk initially.
Our girl is a bit of a loon.

CupcakesK · 04/02/2021 16:21

Oooooh, my two are currently taking all of the sofa space while I sit playing with the baby on the floor.

We’re lucky there are at least 3 other pairs of black hounds in our village alone (other colours are available!)

@Electrocute1980 I predict you’ll end up with a second (or third) before you know it!

Frouby · 04/02/2021 16:21

Gorgeous dogs, we have a whippet but have said that if we lose her we would look at adopting a grey. We had them as kids growing up, lovely kind gentle dogs. Do love my whippy tho.

willFOURbagsbeenough · 04/02/2021 16:22

Ahh what a lovely thread. My ddog died before Xmas and although my head says no more dogs ever again, (because it’s hurts so much when they go) my heart screams yes. Greyhounds are number one on my list for when that time comes.

Electrocute1980 · 04/02/2021 16:23

@LOTM yes we never let him off leash, the place we rehomed him from strongly advised not to. I’m excited because there is a new dog exercise field opening near me (previously the nearest one was about an hour’s drive away) so as soon as I’m able I’ll be booking that for him :)

Oh @Sexnotgender how sad for your boy. He’s lucky to have found a loving home with you.

Btw- am I right in thinking they can’t be rehomed with cats?

Electrocute1980 · 04/02/2021 16:27

@CupcakesK you’re on to something - DD is desperate for another grey and I would have another but the only thing putting me off is I think I’d have to change my car and I love my car, haven’t had it long. But I’d never get the two kids and two greys in. If you don’t mind me asking, what car do you drive?

Depends on the hound. We have 2 cats, boy is totally indifferent to them. Girl would eat them in a heartbeat so they’re separated.
Sexnotgender · 04/02/2021 16:28

I’ve got children and greys. I’ve had Skoda octavia.

Santaiscovidfree · 04/02/2021 16:31

3 sighthounds here. All great off lead.. Very lucky I appreciate!
Here are my girls!!
One sadly was an outside all weather working ddog. Wow does she like her home comforts now!! Other 2 had since dpuppies. All amazing with dc and dcat. Haven't met dkitten yet. Keep putting that off!

Electrocute1980 · 04/02/2021 16:33

@willFOURbagsbeenough some can - it depends on the charity. My local charity foster the greys with families before rehoming and some can be rehomed with cats. You’re best to contact your local place and check. Don’t give up if you don’t have luck there though - our nearest place wouldn’t rehome to us as my son was only 4 at the time so we went further afield to find a rehoming place that look at individual families - my kids were both very used to dogs and my previous dog was very poorly and blind towards the end of his life so they were very conscious of how to behave around dogs. We’ve had no problems at all and he loves the kids. If they are playing a noisy game I just take him into another room with me and let them get on with it!

Thanks all! That’s given me hope this could happen sooner rather than in years down the line.
