Job advice - please help me decide!

Personal situation has changed and it means I need to look for a part time job. My situation is basically I am currently working ft in my job which I started 3m ago. Part time jobs are hard to find but I've got an interview next week for a job and was wondering if I got it whether to take it or not.

Current job

-Local authority

  • 25 hrs temp reduction of hours till May and then they will decide but they aren't positive so don't know. They won't give me an answer now.
  • £10.30/hr
  • mainly office based with the odd day here and there working from home
  • 15min walk from home
  • management - not too keen on so far- lots of micromanaging and other little things
  • colleagues are nice though

Other job

-15 hrs
-£9
-Business
-Remote work with occasional in the office but they weren't clear how much.
-1hr commute one way so 2hrs in a day
-No idea what colleagues / management are like but think they are close knit as small organisation.

Just need some advice - don't know if I'm reacting too soon by looking for a job now or should I wait till May to see what current work say about extending reduced hrs.

I don't know what to do!

Do so pros of this new role outweigh the negatives of your current role?

Personally, I think if you aren't happy where you are, things won't improve, for now. You should be excited about applying for a new role and the fact that you are hesitant makes me question whether this is the right move for you.

I think going to the interview will give a feel for the company and it may give you an idea as to whether or not you would want to move.

I am assuming the pension and terms and conditions are much better with the local authority? I would stay for that reason (and probably keep looking, your alternative job doesn't sound great).

Sprig1 why do you feel the job doesn't sound great? And yes the pension in local authority is way better. Hols are actually more in other job. LA only give 22!

You're right, I am hesitant. I think it's because the LA job is actually decent. It's close by, good pension etc but tbh if they just agreed to the pt hrs I would definitely stay long term. I could also move around internally to another department too. Yes the management I'm not too keen on but I could bear it till something else came up in another department but with all the LA cuts to jobs I don't know! Ooh I don't know. Maybe I'm overthinking this too much.

Stick with current.
The 2 hour commute would be the killer for me.

SherryKee · 04/02/2021 13:05

Chuckleknuckles yes it's pretty long but it would be occasional. But not sure what that actually means yet! But I think around couple of days a month which would be doable as it's not very often.

I don't like job two because of the low hourly rate. Also uncertainty around how often you will have to do that commute and also what the people are like. The team fit is the most important thing as far as I am concerned.

Toorapid · 04/02/2021 19:06

I think I'd have to be really excited about the new job to take it and it doesn't sound like you are.

OhamIreally · 04/02/2021 19:20

Stick with the good pension and no commute. Private sector in my experience really want their pound of flesh and you may end up working more hours for a lower hourly rate.

BenoneBeauty · 04/02/2021 19:25

I'd stay where you are Op.

CormoranStrike · 04/02/2021 19:35

I’d stick with job one, and hope for something better and closer.

SherryKee · 04/02/2021 20:48

Ok looks like a unanimous keep my current job then!

Stick with the currently job but keep a look out for something else in your area. Good luck.
