I’ve always thought the phrase “I beg your pardon” was/sounded posh but as I like to tell my mum when she pulls me up for saying “what?” Instead of “pardon” I now like to trot out some “fact” I read on the internet about how saying pardon is common and essentially equates to begging for forgiveness when you’re beneath someone blah blah (I normally try to trot out the info exactly as I read it but I’m starting to wonder if I’ve made it up 🤦🏻‍♀️)

Ferrero Richer. I was once invited for tea with the mother of a uni friend, who was exceedingly posh. I brought her a box of Ferrero Rocher and realised they were not the thing when I handed them to her.

Kottbullar · 03/02/2021 19:30

I went to play at a friend’s house and was bowled over by the poshness of their dark burgundy bathroom suite

Yes! Coloured bathroom suites, my GP's had avocado with gold taps and brown shag pile, I thought even the Queen would have been jealous Grin

FrameyMcFrame · 03/02/2021 19:32

Asking what’s not posh...

Haha

FrameyMcFrame · 03/02/2021 19:33

En-suites are not posh!

Georgyporky · 03/02/2021 19:34

Having a toilet & bath just for the family was posh for me when I was little.

Legseleven1990 · 03/02/2021 19:34

@FaintlyMacabre

Vienetta
That was the first thing that came into my head too!
MrsBa · 03/02/2021 19:35

Children having their own bedroom, and even posher, a child having a double bed

WinterHoliday · 03/02/2021 19:35

I knew someone (or several people) would say Vienetta. That was my first thought before I opened the thread. I still think of it as being posh, despite the fact that it's really cheap and available in Iceland now!

Imperial Leather soap - we occasionally had it if it was on special offer, but mostly we made do with the Co-op's own brand. I always buy Imperial Leather soap now!

As a teenager I remember reading the Sunday Times supplements and there were always references to people eating sun-dried tomatoes which I assumed were really posh.

DahliaMacNamara · 03/02/2021 19:36

People calling their grandmothers Grandma instead of Gran or Nan/Nana. Awwwwfully fancy.

justanotherneighinparadise · 03/02/2021 19:36

A bidet.

GameSetMatch · 03/02/2021 19:36

I’ve thought of another, shopping at Safeway Mum always said it was too expensive so we shopped at Sainsbury’s instead Confused

cortex10 · 03/02/2021 19:37

My aunt was considered to be posh among her siblings not least because her wine of choice was Blue Nun.

Pinklewinkle · 03/02/2021 19:37

The deluxe Christmas hamper in the catalogue from the milk man, complete with large Ye olde Oak compressed ham in a tin and Birds trifle mix!

ravenia · 03/02/2021 19:37

Viennetta
Quality Street/Roses
Tumble driers
Dishwashers

vinoandbrie · 03/02/2021 19:37

A dishwasher.
Vienetta.
A microwave.
Paper doilies (sp?)
Arctic roll.

All quite kitchen-centric.

Tana433 · 03/02/2021 19:38

@skoobysnax,that takes me right back to the early 90s I had the whole Eternal Beau dinner service as engagement and wedding presents and truly thought i was the "bees knees"! I only have the teapot now and never use it but if i see any in the charity shops or on e-bay i have to really stop myself buying them. I still think they are quite posh but im in a minority!

Viviennemary · 03/02/2021 19:38

Fish knives. When I was a child I went to someones house they had fish knives and forks. I told my Mother and she rolled her eyes. Didn't really realise why till years later.

Guylan · 03/02/2021 19:39

Cruises

pamplemoussed · 03/02/2021 19:39

A landline phone rather than making calls from the local phone box. A fitted kitchen, rather than a freestanding stove and a table .

iljatdip · 03/02/2021 19:40

^This
I knew someone who had a dark burgundy bathroom suite with... drum roll.... corner bath! The height of poshness.

MrsMop1964 · 03/02/2021 19:40

sandwiches cut into triangles rather than rectangles

NativityDreaming · 03/02/2021 19:43

Fettuccine Alfredo, filet mignon, and, weirdly, children’s vitamins.

CurrentWife · 03/02/2021 19:43

Having more than one bath a week 😵

JKRisagryff · 03/02/2021 19:44
