Another Vienetta vote here.

I still feel dead posh on the rare but special occasion I have any 😂

biddybird · 03/02/2021 23:34

… oh, and dark green bin liners (rather than black ones).

tatutata · 03/02/2021 23:35

@Squashpocket

Saying 'pardon'. Apparently properly posh people say 'what?'. Who knew.
I thought everyone knew pardon was rather common.

Having shop bought or new instead of home made or hand me down. DM is still a great believer in false economies.

My friend's house had a fitted kitchen. Our house had a rickety table which DF had built, a dresser and a 1950s cupboard. I remember asking DF if we could have a fitted kitchen. DF said it would cost £30,000 (number plucked out of his ear) so that was that.

I always thought package holidays sounded posh. We went on boating holidays and always ended up moored in the middle of nowhere because DF was always on a schedule so would leave looking for a mooring until it was too late and all the good places had gone.

Eating your evening meal late - 7.30pm onwards

pinkearedcow · 03/02/2021 23:39

Not having to pretend that no one was in when the milkman came round for the milk money. Ditto the telly man and the catalogue lady. We sometimes had to hide behind the sofa.

Onesipmore · 03/02/2021 23:41

Ah thank you @NotAnotherUserNumber !
Well @hansgrueber sorry if what I 'thought' was posh wasn't upper class enough! I rather thought that was the purpose of this thread ?

AliceMadHatter · 03/02/2021 23:46

Chandeliers in bathrooms. Sorry, I don't think it is posh but people do it.

I'm quote enjoying all the 70s and 80s nostalgia on this thread.

I've been reminded of many 'treats' we had at Christmas or Birthdays, which nowadays is everyday, like:

ice cream
quality street or roses
the ubiquitous Viennetta!
Chocolate digestive biscuits - height of decadence
apple juice

I was glad I didn't have packed lunch at school. It was embarrassing enough when I had to have one on school outings, when we went to a museum for the day, or one time to Thorpe Park! Everyone's packed lunches were in proper themed lunch boxes with things like branded chocolate bars, a pure fruit juice box, ham or cheese sandwich wrapped in cling film or foil, a ski yoghurt and Walkers or KP crisps. Mine however was in an old big square marg tub, jam sandwich on sunblest, apple, packet of crisps from Kwiksave or Iceland multipack, and a calypso neon orange drink that tasted of chemicals like the plastic tub it was in (crisps and drink bought specially for the packed lunch event). Kids swapped bits of packed lunch with each other on the coach journey. Nobody wanted any of mine!!!!

It is a wonder most of my generation grew up without rickets!

lovescaca · 04/02/2021 00:13

Coffee

Chutneywashisname · 04/02/2021 00:17

Prosecco!

Fifteen to twenty years ago, I remember my friends and I would 'pop' a bottle of Prosecco if we were celebrating a birthday. We'd share one or two bottles between about six or eight of us. It was a BIG DEAL and we were giddy with the excitement of having two glasses each.
Now Prosecco is seen as a cheap drink for people who can't afford Champagne and its not considered an especially 'special occasion only' drink.

biddybird · 04/02/2021 00:27

… oh and a "fireplace" that switched on at the wall with fake logs and glowing coal.

newtb · 04/02/2021 00:28

I can remember being at a friend's from school, being in their kitchen and her mother talking about doing something with the goose giblets. The first time I 'd heard of someone having roast goose.

They also had a drawing room and a grand piano.

Luffsmypup · 04/02/2021 00:37

Anyone over the age of 5 who called their Mum and Dad, ‘Mummy’ and ‘Daddy’.
Matching dinner plates. Side plates.
A ‘dress’ coat.
Old ladies that didn’t wear a headscarf.

PandemicAtTheDisco · 04/02/2021 00:40

I confused some snobby people with being posh when I was younger - despite knowing several relatively posh people who I assumed were just a bit wild, odd, scruffy and drank too much.

PapercraftNinja · 04/02/2021 00:41

Juicy couture perfume when I was 18 Blush thought I’d made it!

user127819 · 04/02/2021 00:43

Those part-baked Vienna rolls. Because as a child we only had them at Christmas, I assumed they were an expensive "luxury" item.
