Bedtime routine for 8 year old boy

We have always split bedtime up between us with DH putting DD6 to bed and me putting DS8 to bed and then us swapping every other night. DD is in bed by 7pm otherwise she turns into a cranky witch and DS around 8pm. Our routine includes reading them a chapter of their bedtime reading books.

DH has just mentioned that he can't wait for them to be able to put themselves to bed and I'm a little Shock Obviously I appreciate that I won't be doing this when they are older, but can I ask at what age your children start taking themselves to bed? (I should add that DS has started reading David Walliams books on his own so probably doesn't need us for the reading part)

I remember taking myself to bed at that age.

Then again DH has happy memories of MIL reading classic books to him and BIL at bedtime when they were mid-teens.

Whatever works for your family I suppose.

I still read to the 9 yr old.
The 11 year old comes for a goodnight hug, but is otherwise independent. Think that happened when he moved into a midsleeper bed aged 10.

When they ask? Mine are 9&11 and we do the same as you, alternate nights, story, lights out + music.

My 8yo DS takes himself to bed and reads and has done for a year or so now. He’s pretty self-sufficient. Makes his own packed lunch for school the evening before while i get the youngest to bed. Gets himself ready for bed - teeth, face etc
