Last week I downloaded an app from the store. After downloading, I discovered a 7 day free trial. So I signed up to the 7 day free trial thinking I will cancel before the time is up.

I completely forgot about it only a notification came in from PayPal to my email to say that a sum of 50 pounds was taken successfully. It's a year's charge up front and not a monthly. If it was a monthly charge it wouldnt be as bad, it would be a small amoand I could just cancel it.

I'm heartbroken, 50 quid has been taken from my account and I wasn't expecting it. The app is OK, I certainly won't be using it often. I'm distraught.

Is there any way I can sort this out in the hope of getting the money refunded to me.

Is is through an apple account? I've successfully contacted them and asked to have the app cancelled and refunded before now. It's worth a try.

My DS did this recently and the answer is no, especially if it was from the Play store.

I tried every avenue including phoning my bank and making several requests to google but all to no avail.

I've got a feeling there's a very short time window you can claim a refund but can't remember what it is now. Perhaps check the small print.

It's not through an apple account. I'm an android user so its from the android store/Google account.

Read the T&C's of your free trial / purchase and speak to the apps customer service.

Thanks for the replies. I filled out a refund form that was located at the end of the Google play store email/order purchase.

I got an email reminder on Friday but it completely slipped my mind and I had a busy day on Friday and also yesterday. So I completely forgot to cancel before the 7 day free trial was up. Hopefully the refund form will work.

There were two options available.
A quick option with a result within 15 minutes or a longer option of a response within 1 to 2 business days.

I filled out the quick option but that didn't work for me. I got an automatic message to say that it doesn't come in under the refund.
So I filled out the other online form for a review. Hopefully it will work. I really wasn't intending on paying for a stupid app that I don't need.

I dont think you have much chance but good luck - hope they do refund you as a good will thing.

AliceinBunniland · 31/01/2021 17:08

I think you need to be really careful with this sort of thing. I think they bank on people forgetting to cancel the trials so it's probably not worth the risk for 7 days.

As others say there may be ways around it through your bank but it's not something I have done.

I hope you get it back otherwise make sure you make use of the app!

For future reference, if you use free trials:

  1. check if you can cancel immediately- often you can, but still use it for the free trial period
  2. if you can't, make sure your settings are set for a monthly, rather than a yearly payment
  3. put a reminder on your phone to cancel Hope you get your money back though!

It's 100% your fault for not cancelling. Why would they refund you?

The whole point of free trails is the hope that you forget about it so they can automatically run the card
