Can you be in controlling relationship with your boss?

Strange question I know!

I've just changed jobs after nearly 10 years & am getting my head around the differences.

I'm starting to feel like I've been beaten down by my boss in my previous job, controlled in the sense that it was his way or the highway, I felt that I was rubbish at my job (despite having 20 years experience) and couldn't do anything right.

I did think this was just another manager-managee relationship, but my new job want my views on things & have asked me what I want out of my career - I realised that I've not been asked that for over 10 years.

I can't believe I'm only just seeing this. Is this common in jobs? Or was I just unlucky?

You were one of the many that were unlucky I think. Have a mature, mutually respectful relationship and lay down the rules to start with.

Thanks for replying, I think you're right.

There's someone in my new job who has the potential to be similar, so I'm really going to need to be aware of this so it doesn't happen again.
