I've just come across this and the reviews look good. It wouldn't be my usual genre as I avoid anything vampire/witch based and I have commitment issues soooo before I dive in, do you recommend it?

I live in oxford so it resonates and the first few mins of season 1 have grabbed me enough to pause it to watch with DH in half an hour when he's back IF you all say it's brilliant Grin

I listened to the audiobook when it came out. I did quite like it, I'm not a fantasy lover either. I also listened to the sequel, but not the third in the series.

It was rather long though, seemed neverending at times!

Noshowlomo · 30/01/2021 15:50

Yes love it. Watched both series

PippaParsnip · 30/01/2021 16:01

I don't think I'd feel compelled to read it or listen to the audio book

I like it.
But I read all the books first.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 30/01/2021 16:05

I loved it, but the books are better.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 30/01/2021 16:11

There's quite a long discussion in TV chat if you're interested can't link atm. As others have said the books are brilliant, the shows were a disappointment compared to the books but I found the second series better than the first. I think you'd probably enjoy it more if you hadn't read the books.

Sceptre86 · 30/01/2021 16:17

I don't like it. We have just finished watching the first season and I dislike both main characters. I found it to be like twilight for adults, other characters are ok but the main two are bloody annoying. I ended up rooting for the antagonists.

TheNationsFavourite · 30/01/2021 16:17

It's not my usual sort of thing but quite enjoying it. It feels like Harry Potter for adults.

AnathemaPulsifer · 30/01/2021 16:18

I watched season 1 then read all the books, then watched season 1 again before season two came out. The series isn’t as good as the books, but it’s still good.

Luzina · 30/01/2021 16:20

I read the books first. The heroine is incredibly irritating in the books, less so in the tv version. It’s an enjoyable watch imo with some good actors but it isn’t anything special

DinnaeFashSassenach · 30/01/2021 16:25

I enjoyed the series but the books (particularly Shadow of Night and Book if life) are pretentious and as someone said on here in another DoW thread, the author is constantly attempting to show off her academic studies at,!presumably, Oxford of Tudor England and notable literary figures and detracting from the very clever and engaging storyline. This is one time I like that the screen version cut out the pointless chunks of the books.

petrocellihouse · 30/01/2021 16:38

It’s complete and utter bilge but I loved it! Great watch if you want something you don’t have to think about too much.

IceDiscoSkater · 30/01/2021 16:47

It’s a great show, easy watching , it’s true that the two main characters love entanglement is slightly irritating a la Twilight but hey it’s only TV !

Cool costumes in Series 2,lots of Elizabethan dresses / ruffles / hairdos - I loved it.

PippaParsnip · 30/01/2021 17:03

I won't be reading the books as vampires and witches are very much not my thing. I don't usually watch anything magical or woo but just finished episode 1 and enjoyed it a lot actually. For a bit of escapism

Watching episode 9 of season 2 now and was interested to know what other people thought of it.

The books are great - apart from the strangely prudish/twee approach to sex (if you’ve read them, you’ll likely know what I mean).

The tv show is not great. It could be...but it’s just not. Teresa Palmer overacts quite a bit and somehow makes the character totally insufferable (I actually thought Diana was ok in the books). Matthew Goode is great though.

romany4 · 05/02/2021 12:49

I absolutely loved it.
Binge watched Season 2 in one day!

justjuggling · 05/02/2021 14:02

Haven’t read the books, have watched both series and preferred 1 to 2. It’s easy watching but I lost interest as the second series progressed.

HugeAckmansWife · 05/02/2021 14:07

Matthew Goode in leather trousers - its worth it for that alone. Its perfect binge watch lockdown tosh really. Not original, profound or winning any awards probably but given that we all have a lot of time to fill, why not?

MichelleofzeResistance · 05/02/2021 14:08

I binge watched series 1 and 2 and loved it, have now bought all the books which are even better and explain a lot more of the details.

Oblomov21 · 06/02/2021 21:32

Watching it now. So far enjoying it.

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 06/02/2021 21:48

I enjoy the tv show more than the books which I found tedious and pretentious.

Mathew Goode is rather lovely to look at.

inquietant · 06/02/2021 21:50

I liked it lots, thought it was excellent escapism.

shhsecretsquirrel · 06/02/2021 22:10

Loved book 1; book 2 I seem to recall put me off as it was as if the author was over complicating what was an otherwise engaging interesting story. I've found the same with the tv series but the book turned around I think so I'll stick with it and watch the rest. I don't think I could bring myself to read the third book so will just wait for the tv show
