Tv licence

I have decided not to renew my tv licence as I only watch youtube videos. Nothing else.

I declared it and just remembered about live zoom meetings.

I called them but they are closed.

Does anyone know if a tv licence is needed for live zoom calls?

Sorry if its a silly question.

Zoom calls and meetings.

Does the BBC own zoom?
If not, no

HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks · 30/01/2021 11:56

No, Zoom is nothing to do with the BBC or TV. You're fine.

The "live" they mean is "live broadcast TV"

This is actually hilarious.

abcd33 · 30/01/2021 11:58

@HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks thank youuu sooooo much!!!! Was a bit worried. Just had to make sure!! Every year I keep renewing it and just watch youtube videos instead. Feels like wasting £157. Could buy something for my LO :)

You definitely don't need to have a license for that

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 30/01/2021 12:21

We haven't had a TV licence for years and I recently had a panic and checked if we need one for zoom, online classes and britbox. All of which you definitely don't!

abcd33 · 30/01/2021 12:31

@LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus aww thank you for sharing that!!!

Oooh I’ve been thinking about cancelling mine too
How did you go about it ?
We only watch you tube here too , Netflix and prime ?
I must go and check if those count ...

PotteringAlong · 30/01/2021 12:48

You do need one if you watch iplayer. Do you not have cebeebies on at all? You will need a tv licence for that.

PotteringAlong · 30/01/2021 12:49

You don’t need it for Netflix and prime. They’re not run by the BBC

DuzzyFuck · 30/01/2021 12:59

If you don't have an licence you can't watch the BBC at all, live or steamed from iPlayer.

You can't watch or records any other channels live either, but you can download or stream them later.

You can watch as much Netflix / Prime / All4 / ITVhub etc as you like. You can watch BBC shows that have been bought and are then available on Netflix, for example.

It has no affect at all on YouTube, Zoom, Skype etc

I keep considering get rid of my licence but I do watch the odd thing on iPlayer. I don't watch any live TV though, my TV isn't even connected to an aerial or freeview box.

IceDiscoSkater · 30/01/2021 13:04

How would they know if you watched the odd hour of c beebies though ? Grin

Wrong. You need a licence to watch everything.

The law says you need to be covered by a TV Licence to:

 • *watch or record programmes as they’re being shown on TV, on any channel

 • *watch or stream programmes live on an online TV service (such as ITV Hub, All 4, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Now TV, Sky Go, etc.)

 • *download or watch any BBC programmes on iPlayer.

This applies to any device you use, including a TV, desktop computer, laptop, mobile phone, tablet, games console, digital box or DVD/VHS recorder.

You only need one TV Licence per household, even if you use more than one of the devices listed above. A TV Licence costs £157.50 for colour TV, and £53 for black and white.

DuzzyFuck · 30/01/2021 13:12

@totallybored I can't see what you've said that's any different to what I've said, aside from I missed downloading from iPlayer (but I did say you can't watch BBC at all) ?

You watch ITV hub, just not live. You can watch All4, just not live. Netflix, Prime, NowTV etc are not live anyway.

TheQueef · 30/01/2021 13:13

You're wrong Totally
I think you are muddling the second bolded with streaming/ streaming live.

abcd33 · 30/01/2021 18:53

@IceDiscoSkater I declared it online. Filled out a form. Was supposed to recieve an email to confirm it but email never came :/ but screen shot that it was completed.

We don’t even watch CBBies. Just youtube nursery / children videos.

OP posts:
abcd33 · 30/01/2021 18:55

@DuzzyFuck thanks for that. I used to renew it thinking I’m going to watch bbc iplayer but haven’t watched anything in years! I’m way too busy with work so other than nursery rhymes tv is off.

OP posts:
abcd33 · 30/01/2021 18:55

@PotteringAlong nothing. No cbbies. Just youtube videos.

My bro hadn't had one for a while and they started coming to his house. I know it's a slightly different situation for you as you say you'll just watch YT but he was watching terrestrial. For £3 a week just pay the bloody thing!
