Places people rave about but you don't really have any desire to visit

I know there's some element of judgement here but just based on what I've heard, seen on TV, types of people who go there, read about..

Dubai.. like plastic fantastic, cultureless and horrifically tacky

Thailand.... Looks like it's been ruined by all the tourists and those full moon parties look a bit dark and sinister

Australia.. some parts look lovely but just seems a bit British and dare I say it racist...

@DBML

And I wouldn’t vacation here in the UK either. I did enough of that as a child/teen and loathe UK holidays. UK holiday companies are even worse e.g. Butlins.
Where have you been on holiday in the UK that has put you off? There are some stunning places to go to and I suspect you've never been to many of them. I don't go on holiday in the UK because it doesn't have what I am looking for in my main holiday but I do a lot of day trips to places when I'm not working.
Bangable · 30/01/2021 11:51

I honestly cannot believe someone said NZ and Canada.

They must be utterly soulless to hold such opinions.

Wimpeyspread · 30/01/2021 11:51

Las Vegas - looks tacky on a monumental scale. The US as a whole really

nuitdesetoiles · 30/01/2021 11:51

@Bangable why weird and ignorant? It's my experience! And because I find too much cooking on holiday isn't much like a holiday it's put me off going again... vegetarian food in the UK is sometimes pretty substandard outside big cities especially in pubs. The lakes from my 5+ visits there to Windermere, Keswick, Buttermere, Grasmere amongst others seem to be all about pubs!

Australia, India, Dubai

Ultimatecougar · 30/01/2021 11:54

Cyprus. People I know who go there love it and it looks very nice for a sunny holiday, but after the case where that poor girl was prosecuted after reporting she had been gang raped and it was even caught on film - no way.

Cattenberg · 30/01/2021 11:57

@Ultimatecougar, maybe those of us who are boycotting Cyprus should let them know. If enough people did that, the Cypriot government might think twice.

Lurkingforawhile · 30/01/2021 11:57

Dubai, las Vegas, the canary islands (I've been to one, lovely hotel but too windy and bleak!), australia (the spiders), bits of India although Kerala looks interesting, the Faklands, Antarctic cruise. I didn't think I would like NY but has been twice and like it both times. Been to HK once and it was an experience but wouldn't go back.

TheVanguardSix · 30/01/2021 11:58

I'd get on a plane for:
Norway
Banff, Canada
Estonia
Lviv, Ukraine
Baku, Azerbaijan
Montevideo, Uruguay
Ankgor Wat in Cambodia (and Cambodia in general only because I am so interested in its history).
Laos
Oman
Any cities near the Arctic Circle/Yakutsk

Yeah the USA is just one homogeneous mass of awful. Who could possibly want to hike in Bryce Canyon or Yosemite, see dolphins and whales in the Pacific, watch manatees in Florida or see sunrise over the Joshua trees? It’s beyond grim.
lastqueenofscotland · 30/01/2021 12:00

Venice - I’ve been, my enduring memory was that it stank.

Vegas - again, I’ve been it was hotter than the surface of the sun, a bit dull and actually a bit problematic.

Dubai - not been but doesn’t appeal at all.

mbosnz · 30/01/2021 12:00

No place has universal appeal! It's okay not to want to go somewhere, it's not an indictment on that country. Although saying something like 'it seems a little bit racist', about a country you've never stepped foot in, is a bit of an indictment. Not on the country, so much, I feel. Smile

I honestly don't understand how someone from the UK can complain about the dogshit in Paris? I swear, the most pervasive smell on any walk at the moment, is dog shit, occasionally interspersed with cigarette smoke.

Anyways, the places I have no desire to go. UAE, San Francisco, Israel, Russia, India.

Where I'd love to go?
NZ
Maldives
Croatia
France, I've only seen Paris
Italy - I've only seen Rome
I love Spain.
New Forest
Scotland
Ireland
Wales

Lurkingforawhile · 30/01/2021 12:01

@MessAllOver I'd be keen to visit a service station too! Just to be on the way to somewhere. My friend visited her family at Xmas in Bournemouth and I was very envious.

ItsJustARide · 30/01/2021 12:02

@Roystonv

Ha! Poor food in the Lake District, what a weird comment.
Was thinking the same and wondering where OP had eaten! It’s a foodie destination with 8 Michelin starred restaurants for starters..
tunainoliveoil · 30/01/2021 12:03

@PuppyMonkey

Alton Towers.
It's rubbish, next!
400rabbits · 30/01/2021 12:04

China. A friend visited last year and said the pollution in the cities was the worst she'd ever seen. And even worse the incredibly cruel way they treat animals... then of course you have the treatment of the Uighurs, the Tibetans...just no thanks.

letsnotscaretheneighbours · 30/01/2021 12:05

Australia, no idea why not just really do not fancy it.

New York. Mind I'm not a huge fan of America full stop.

Only two places I just don't fancy. Can't tell you why either.

NorbertMeubles · 30/01/2021 12:05

Florida
Dubai
China

400rabbits · 30/01/2021 12:05

Sorry not last year obviously, she went in 2019. Covid has been going on for so long I'm losing track of the years!

Glera · 30/01/2021 12:05

Vegas and Dubai.

likeamillpond · 30/01/2021 12:06

The Maldives.

nuitdesetoiles · 30/01/2021 12:06

Maybe I'm not enough of a "foodie" then..Hmm

The type of food on offer even in the high end places is not my bag and all the "foodie" stuff is generally about meat and fish which I don't eat. I refuse to pay upwards of £100 for a meal when I can pick up some Street food locally which is, to me, far tastier and satisfying. I've done the whole taster menu/fine dining thing previously, and whilst on the enjoyment didn't justify the cost. A high end veggie restaurant opened up locally and we had the 12 course taster menu, and whilst it was ok I get far greater satisfaction from a decent curry.

What the fuck is 'Mainland Europe' anyway?
Northern Spain?
The Swiss Alps?
Sicily?
Croatia?
Greece?
The Auvergne?
Breathtaking, blinkered, twattish ignorance on the part of the poster to lump a huge, highly diverse continent together like this.

Poverty exists the world over. The worst I saw was in West Africa and it was a sobering, reflective experience that I remember well. Perhaps that's one point of international travel.

Just not a huge fan of British food even with a "twist" and I've tried curry in the lakes. Poor everytime... Ended up shopping, meal planning and cooking loads last time I was there. Not much fun on holiday. I go away to have a break from that!
