Help with teaching my son

Hi my son is 5 in year one. He's having assessments for autism. But he's also behinde education wise. He's not had a echp yet. But I have noticed even more how he struggles. His teacher has told me to do reception work with him instead. But he still struggles with this as well. A couple of examples :

Phonics sounds. Me: is it 's' for sausage or 'm' for sausage... him: 'm ' for sausage. Me : 'm' for sausage? Are you sure? Him: yes it's 'm' for sausage. So that happens with practically every letter.

So then I try reversing is so I ask is it 'n' for egg or 'e' for egg. He says 'e' for egg. So I start thinking he's getting it now. Then it turns out he's just repeating the last thing I said.

It's a similar situation with the maths. With pictures 2 hats add 2 more hats is ? He says 9. Or he ignore the + and just counts what he sees so he's not actually doing the math question? I have tried counting frames as well.

So what do I do? Thank you 😊

He may need a more multi sensory approach.
With the sounds use a sand tray, ask him (with help if needed) to draw the letter when he says the sound in the sand. You do the same when you ask him which sound it is so he can see, feel and hear.

With the maths show him the maths with Lego prices or small toys, it does help.

My DS has ASD and is dyslexic. He spent his maths lessons in year one using toy animals figures to help him count to 10 - 1 in row 1, 2 in row 2 etc. He’s year 8 and in middle set for maths.

Phonics doesn’t work for all children. I know a child who could never click with phonics but just learnt words by sight/memeory.

Has he had any formal assessment to look at the way he learns best?
