Tips on how to have a lovely last weekend with DDog

PowerhouseOfTheCell · 29/01/2021 10:24

Found out last night DDog has several inoperable liver tumours so on Monday we will be having him PTS. I know its the right thing to do but I haven't stopped crying since we found out Sad

Any tips on how to get through the next few days and make them the a positive experience, especially since we have a foster child currently living with us who is very close to Ddog

I'd take dog to their favourite place locally (would be the beach for us) and make them a meal, plus lots of hugs and kisses. Take photos if you don't have them already.

CookEatRepeat · 29/01/2021 10:28

Just a favourite walk. You will treasure the memories of that. I’m so sorry. We had to do this earlier this month so you have all my sympathy. CookDog was only able for a walk to the vet, but he loved going there, so actually it is a nice memory.

TheDogsMother · 29/01/2021 10:31

Aww I'm so sorry OP, how heart breaking. A walk at his favourite place. Does he like the car ? Ours used to love being driven about. Some of his favourite food and treats. Cuddles with you all.

Doidontimmm · 29/01/2021 10:33

I’d take mine to the local beach and buy her a whole ice cream as a special treat, she would think she had won the lottery! She normally gets a tiny bit and loves it!

Yumyumdindins · 29/01/2021 10:33

Very sorry for your news OP. How heartbreaking. If this was us with YumDog then I’d let him sleep on the bed with us (he loves being on the bed but isn’t allowed).

teaiseverything · 29/01/2021 10:35

Lots of pictures. Plenty of cosy snuggles. A banquet of their favourite foods. Paw rubs. Ear rubs. All they want is their people, ultimately. You are his whole world and, so, while he might not remain earth-side physically, he'll always watch over you from Rainbow Bridge. You'll meet again one day and in the meantime, he'll be having an absolute ball.

Wishing you the loveliest weekend.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 29/01/2021 10:37

Is he well enough for treats?

I cooked prime pork sausages for our ddog during her last days, and pretended they were for me (on my plate). Ditto IIRC a piece of steak.
Heartfelt commiserations, OP, I know all too well how horrible it is. 💐

FluffyPersian · 29/01/2021 10:38

I am really sorry to hear about your Dog. I knew I had to put my previous cat to sleep due to kidney failure and not wanting to have him suffer right at the end.

I gave him squeezy cheese straight from the tube, ham and chicken. We sat on the sofa and watched 'Cats and Dogs' (He was a Persian and the evil Mastermind was Mr Tinkles - another Persian). I told him how much I loved him and how sorry I was.... lots of tears...

We played 'Hand under the duvet' a lot, played with balls and string all weekend.

When it was time, I'd actually bought him a special bed and the nurse and vet came out to us, I didn't want it to happen at the surgery (I appreciate that may not be possible in current circumstances).

I spoke to a local Pet Crematorium beforehand, made various choices so that when the time came, it was already agreed and I could just grieve without having to deal with the 'details'. They were really, really good and gave me an update as to what was happening and when.

This was 8 years ago and it was still one of the most painful things I've had in my life. However.... I am so, so glad I had a few final days with him and am so glad he enjoyed them.

You're making the decision out of love - giving him a few final days full of love and happiness is such a lovely thing to do. Wishing you lots of strength.

I’m so sorry, it’s heartbreaking. Flowers

I was in a similar situation with inoperable tumours but my dog was in a bit of pain so we only did very short walks and couldn’t go to his favourite place.

We got a whole buffet of his most favourite foods and offered them to him regularly which he hoovered up.

Instead of tidying up toys, just let him spread them out everywhere.

He slept in our bed for the last night which we’d never done before.

Take loads of photos and videos. We played lovely music too which felt nice and helped make memories.

PowerhouseOfTheCell · 29/01/2021 10:41

Thank you all so much Flowers We're of taking him to the local park which he can't go to most of the time due to being allergic to the type of grass it has Confused he'll be chuffed and running around a like a loon.

He's fine in himself except for a bit of weight loss but vet has confirmed the tumour is quite large and will be causing him some discomfort even if he's not showing it

Bless him. Share a photo with us if you like and we can think about him Flowers

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 29/01/2021 10:48

Oh I’m sorry OP.

I’m the same as others. Best walks. Best food. Treats that they love but don’t normally get. Best cuddles. Happiness at all times. (Hard I know) Wrapped in a cloud of love.

I’m sorry. This is so hard Flowers

We lost our ddog last Pancake Day. A year after beating cancer, vet suspected a brain tumour was causing her aggressive episodes.. We took her down our local beach and we all had fish and chips. The actual day she had 2 pancakes with Nutella and we all had a sing song in the kitchen - she loved us all being daft
.
A very hard day..
Her very last pic in the car on her final journey.
Imo too raw to look at the last few pics but I have had earlier ones framed..
Well wishes to you op... A truly awful time.

My dog is quite elderly now and when the time comes I plan to just feed her lots of her favourite foods and to let her sleep in my bed with me, which is her absolute favourite place to be but she isn't usually allowed - sending hugs

Haenow · 29/01/2021 11:05

Forgot to add, make paw prints (if he’s up to it) and maybe a lock of his fur/hair. The pet crematorium did this for us but you may want to do it yourself.

Doidontimmm · 29/01/2021 11:13

I have this paw print of mine made from an impression of her paw in copper :)

He's part poodle so I don't think he'd mind a few curls being cut off Smile
@Doidontimmm that is a lovely impression and might be a good idea for a memento for foster child.

We had ddog cremated. Ashes came back with paw prints and lock of fur...
We have scattered some in holiday and in some of ddogs favourite places..

PowerhouseOfTheCell · 29/01/2021 11:53

One minute I feel like I've got my head around the idea and know its the right thing, the next I'm in floods looking at dog food in Asda Hmm

We had short walks and lots of cuddles. And took lots of photos. She lived off scrambled egg, cheese, chicken and hot dog sausages the last few days. She had lots of kisses.
We buried her in the garden in her stripy jumper and scarf so she didnt get cold, wrapped in her favourite blanket.
Her lead hangs in the shed with her favourite toy, bluecat, who has a cape made out of a bit of favourite blanket.
We also took fur clippings. They're stuck in her veterinary record with a favourite photo.

Santaiscovidfree · 29/01/2021 15:09

We chose a date, said out loud 'Is this us making the decision?'
My head hurt for those 2 weeks waiting for the date..
We told dc and we all spent time with her (under strict supervision due to her recent behaviour). She was feisty to the end. I would say check and double check the vet's protocol due to Covid. I have heard some pts in the back of cars... Some allow 1 person in the surgery...

Doidontimmm · 02/02/2021 15:55

Hope you are ok OP Flowers
