Bruises/scratches on DS, can I have your take please?

DS is three and non verbal (he has SEN)

Tonight when I was getting him undressed for his bath I found these nasty marks on his stomach. To me it looks like he has been clawed.

He goes to nursery two days a week (was last there yesterday) and they didn't mention any incidents/accidents.

I didn't notice anything last night when I was getting him changed for bed because we keep his vest on to wear under his pyjamas when the weather is cold so wouldn't have seen his stomach anyway.

We have a 21 month old DD who lives with us and the kids have two half siblings (9 and 10) that visit a couple of times per week, last here today.

They do play rough and tumble but are never spiteful towards him, I really can't see any of my DSC doing that.

DS does like to climb and jump over furniture but I can't see anything in the house that would cause those type of marks.

I'm absolutely baffled as I am concerned because I can't explain what's happened.

If nursery don't know anything about it they're going to ask me and I can't explain either Confused

Could he have scratched himself?

pumpkinsoups · 28/01/2021 21:08

Has he been lying on a carpet playing ?

SeasTheDay · 28/01/2021 21:08

They appear too uniform for human nails. No clue what though. Seems ‘dragged’ to me. As if he’s dragged himself against something with that pattern. Just a guess of course.

Have you been playing outside? It looks like he's caught his skin on a wall or something-like he's slid down it x poor baby 😢 x

thelegohooverer · 28/01/2021 21:09

The placement doesn’t look right to me for “clawing”. Surely a thumb nail wouldn’t line up like that?

But I don’t know what to suggest it is.

Whatistbise · 28/01/2021 21:09

@Popfan

Could he have scratched himself?
It's possible, though I've never seen him do anything like that before and he hasn't done it when I've been watching him (and I have to watch him like a hawk)

My first thought was a child at nursery had done it but nursery report all injuries to parents and they didn't mention anything.

Radiator burn?

cautiouscovidity · 28/01/2021 21:11

I don't think it's a hand scratch. The lines all start in roughly the same place which they wouldn't as fingers are different lengths.
Maybe a toy (sandpit rake?)

Whatistbise · 28/01/2021 21:13

Crossed posts sorry, thanks for the replies

He hasn't been playing outside no, we walked home from nursery yesterday but he didn't trip or fall on the way.

He does like to climb on the sofa and slide in between that and the console table but the sideboard doesn't have a uniform pattern like that. It's almost rake like.

We do have a large rug in the living room he plays on but the marks don't seem to fit with that either.

So baffled.

Could it be a zip mark, perhaps from a coat?

LubaLuca · 28/01/2021 21:13

It could be that a toy has scraped him, something like a rake from a sandpit, or a digger with a pronged edge to its scoop.

Justanotherdayina · 28/01/2021 21:15

Or when you have picked up, something on your clothing?

Whatistbise · 28/01/2021 21:15

We don't have radiators no

Maybe a toy (sandpit rake?)

They do have a sand pit at nursery, I don't know whether they have toy rakes but if they do then that is quite fitting.

I think that is he was ‘clawed’ it
Would just be 4 scratches from the fingers.

Toreportornot · 28/01/2021 21:18

Could it be the teeth on a zip have scratched him?

Aquamarine1029 · 28/01/2021 21:19

Honestly, I wouldn't get overly worked up about this, especially if it's a one off. Little ones are always getting a scratch or bruise from one thing or another. It looks to me as though he slid down/over something and it scratched his tummy. If it keeps happening, the same kind of marks, then yes you need to figure it out, but a one off with no serious injury really isn't something to be too worried about.

triceratops12 · 28/01/2021 21:24

That looks like a pattern rather than scratch marks. Like he's been hit with something/leant against something. A radiator?

Whatistbise · 28/01/2021 21:31

We don't have radiators at home but I can see what you mean and why you suggested it. I burnt my backside on a radiator as a child and remember the marks that leaves.

It's the first time I've ever found something like this on him (and he's a whirlwind who's always bumping something or other)

OP posts:
Clymene · 28/01/2021 21:37

That looks like he's leaned against something or scraped against something. They're too uniform and there are too many to be animal / human

alittlebitofbreadandnocheese · 28/01/2021 23:49

They are not scratch marks. Too uniform in how spaced out they are size, shape etc

JanuaryChill · 28/01/2021 23:58

It's like he's fallen or been pushed hard against something with ribs or rails. Must have hurt him?
