Animal Crossing - A Beginners Guide Please!!

DD (7) was very kindly gifted Animal Crossing New Horizons today and it looks lovely, and like something that she would adore, but we're struggling to figure it out! I've googled and can see something about building a house, an airport, fruit & bells! Please could somebody give me a very basic beginners guide, ideally speaking to me as if I'm a complete idiot! Thank you!

There is a lot to learn but would suggest looking up some beginners guides on You Tube - there are loads! Especially any ones that say 'watch before you start'

My son was age 7 when he started it and managed to walk through it without any help so maybe just get going with it once you've watched a few intro videos.

A couple of immediate tips are:

  • Make sure the profile that will be the main player opens the game first and establishes and is in charge of the island. Any other family profiles can also visit the island but are secondary players unable to do a lot of things.
  • Be careful where you put houses and you have to pay money to move them at a later point if you want to. My son put my house without a gap behind it (to walk around) it's really annoying!
  • Again be careful what island design you choose as you can't change it.

Other than that I don't think we had any mishaps, so enjoy. He's always loved building and designing so he played this game non stop when he first got it in Lockdown 1.

There’s a long running thread on here somewhere, guess on the gaming section, where people swap codes and arrange to buy turnips, etc.

That's really helpful, thanks so much!

YouTube for sure but the game does a good job at showing you how to do things in the correct order.

Yes agree @KenAdams the game does walk you through it well.

You have to be quite patient. A lot of the fairly basic stuff like the shop and museum aren't unlocked until a few days in.

Thank you!! It seems to be night time just now and not very much happening, is that right, will it open up in the morning? (it's looks so lovely, we can't wait to get it going!)

You can go in the green tent and talk to Tommy/Timmy. They’ll give you things and tell you how to make a fishing rod and net so you can catch things to sell back to Timmy/Tommy.

I got animal crossing for Christmas as something to do once the kids are in bed and DP is at work (he works late)

My suggestions would be to go careful where you place houses etc as they cost a fortune to move!

You can knock down walls and fill in rivers later on, once you’ve un locked the construction app so don’t worry if you don’t like a river position.

If you started the island with apple trees, don’t sell your apples in your shop. Sell them at an islands shop who started with a different fruit. You get more bells for it!
