We have a firebomb proof letter box & CCTV all round the house, and panic buttons in every room.
Kids are used to it, but babysitters always needed careful instructions not to press the buttons otherwise armed police might arrive.

Kids don’t use the TV downstairs, so it’s usually set to the parliament channel.

Maireas · 29/01/2021 07:53

@LatteToday - any reason, or just annoying neighbours?

Poppins2016 · 29/01/2021 07:55

@TheSunIsStillShining

It seems we are more normal than we thought
  • 2 "offices" in the living room
  • freeze bread and milk
  • keep jam in fridge (also from hot country times :) )

but when we get a cat she will be banned from the bedroom.

Hmm. I said the same about cats and bedrooms. 10 years later... I'm typing this message while my cat is sleeping at the end of the bed. The cats do know (and surprisingly respect) that I don't share pillows, though... I have my limits! Grin

DH is politician

@PandemicAtTheDisco

I have a wildflower garden. None of the neighbours listen when I tell them about the birds and bees. They really object to it (the garden not the environmental lectures).

I don't want help weeding my garden, I don't want weed killer sprayed over it. It was fantastic a few years ago and several environmentalists visited to examine the species diversity.

My neighbour gasped out loud when she saw me creating flowerbeds, it was as though she couldn't comprehend that someone might want more than a lawn!

I now have bee friendly flowerbeds, a lawn containing lots of clover and Daisy's, plus the start of a "proper" wildflower lawn/meadow right at the back of the garden... my neighbour thinks I'm nuts but I love it 😁

The first time I went round to my boyfriend's house (now DH) he had a workbench in the sitting room with a drill. It took a lot of persuasion on my part to make him get rid of it!

ISpeakJive · 29/01/2021 08:45
  • Since lockdown last year, I have put anything that can go stale in an IKEA lock bag . I got the massive 4.5L ones and it even holds a loaf of bread. My cereal lasting longer as still crunchy. My bread is fresh even where it's cut. The cooked meat in the fridge is still fresh*

Don’t suppose my DH can fit in one of those?

iamasun · 29/01/2021 08:45

We have a 12 pointer stags head on the wall, probably not that weird though.

Not got a stag but we have an elk's head that serves the purpose of tool hanger. Got some reindeer antlers somewhere too but I think they might be in the garage now.

@TheDaydreamBelievers - here's his sloth collection as it was before Christmas (he has three more now Blush and his favourite massive one that he carries around.

@BalconiWaferAddict - in a nutshell, just after we'd adopted him, someone gave me a lovely cuddly sloth for my birthday and he hankered and hankered after it, so I found him a sloth dog toy and he was so happy. I posted a pic of him holding it on FB and it just became a thing, because my friends are ridiculous.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 29/01/2021 09:47

@spiderlight this is EXACTLY what I needed. Has made my day

All our kitchen cupboard doors are on backwards. We didn't realise when we hung them ourselves but we are both left handed. In our old house we also had one curtain windows and apparently the curtains opened the wrong way Confused I think probably a lot of left handed stuff I have no idea about because it feels normal for us!

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 29/01/2021 09:55

Oh Slothdog, you are wonderful!

BendyLikeBeckham · 29/01/2021 10:01

Reading this thread, I'm imagining lots of MNers living in 17th Century farmhouses in the Cotswolds....

I'm loving the quirky things people do and have.

Mine are that I live in a house with stairs but don't have bannisters; in my row of houses, many front gardens are bigger than the back gardens, and I can see an massive ancient burial mound from my bedroom.

Also, I have some flat pack furniture I bought 10 years ago and for various reasons haven't built yet.

My bins live on the pavement.

What does this mean? Cupboards can open to the left or to the right. If they are double you have one opening left and one opening right. That's normal.

How can you pull a curtain open back to front? They move in the direction you need them to open. One left, on right.

Confused

DH likes the disgustingly rich full-fat-and-more milk that still comes in bottles (🤢) and refers to my preferred skimmed milk as "cow wee". The name stuck, so that's what we all call it. We just have to be careful not to say it in front of visitors... Grin

BendyLikeBeckham · 29/01/2021 10:09

and now I have to name change!

lockdownshmockdown · 29/01/2021 10:13

@Pyewhacket

We have a fully functioning Spitfire engine ( as in the aeroplane ) in our garage. Nobody in our house thinks that’s unusual. We also have a double decker bus ( not at home - too big to fit in the garage ) kids loved it when they were nippers. When I say we, it’s my slightly eccentric husband. He also writes lists, notes and text’s me in perfect German. He’s not German.

My partner would like to visit Grin

Nopreservatives · 29/01/2021 10:15

My mum keeps fruit in the tumble dryer. It's rarely used for laundry but is cool, dark and ventilated...

Guests would think it was very odd when DC were told to get themselves some fruit and head straight for the tumble dryer.

My house bunny sleeps in bed with me - he is extremely clean and fully house trained - everyone I know finds it funny 🐇
@MadameTuffington I think I want your life...

We have a 6 foot carved wood gothic abbots chair in our dining room......

I love antiques and my friend found this one on Facebook and said 'Of interest?' ..... 2 hours later, we were driving 30 minutes to collect it (no, it didn't properly fit in the car so lots of rope was involved.)

We also have a 300+ bottle wine rack which we bought off eBay for £40 and it is probably 70% filled..... We wanted to know where things were, so we got some plastic plant labels and wrote 'France' , 'Italy' 'South Africa' on the labels, and stuck them to the side with sticky tape...... reds go to the right, whites to the left.... champagne is on the top (we don't have a lot so it works!).... I think the sticky tape and plant labels look very classy.... Grin

@BitOfFun
I agree with PP that house is amazing ,your DH is very talented.
He could make bespoke dolls houses , I am sure there would be a market for them .

MrsKoala · 29/01/2021 10:58

@spiderlight your dog and sloths are lovely and cheered me right up. Have you mentioned what type of dog it is? My setters and spaniels never carried anything around. They just used to lay too near the fire and bark at it when they got too hot! They’d never move though 😂
