I feel like I’ve watched every family friendly film in the world... give me your recommendations

Every weekend we sit down as a family and attempt to watch a film together and every weekend we spend ages trying to find something to watch and I actually feel like I’m running out of things to watch. Please share your finds with me. If it helps this is what we’ve watched lately.

Every single marvel film about a million times
Indiana Jones (all of them)
Harry Potter (see above)
Wonder Woman 2 (dreadful)
Military wives
Hunt for the wilder people (brilliant)
Le Mans 66
Senna
Knives Out
To catch a thief
Ghostbusters (old and new)
Jurassic parks (old and new)
Soul (loved)

And many others. My DC are 14 and 12 btw. TIA for your suggestions

There’s a screen in Brassed Off where Simon Tompkinson hangs himself. I wouldn’t show that to my 12 year old. I really want him to see the film, as we live in the S Yorks coalfield, and I have a (now retired) former colleague who was a mine surveyor at the time the film is set. It’s very real local history, but my 12 year old is not ready for the scene of the hanging clown. Not yet.

A few ideas - sorry if I've repeated any...

Guardians of the Galaxy
Austin Powers
The Princes Bride
Independence Day
Men in Black
Maze Runner films
Percy Jackson
We bought a zoo
Spiderman - Homecoming
Spiderman - Into the Spiderverse (amazing!)
The Goonies
Stand by me
Karate Kid
ET
Night at the Museum

CakesOfVersailles · 28/01/2021 10:44

If you liked Hunt for the Wilderpeople you might like Boy (2010) and Whale Rider.

Sound of Music? It's a classic. Maybe Fiddler on the Roof.

Princess Bride.

Princess Diaries.

Legally Blonde.

Hunger Games?

Hidden Figures.

Apollo 13.

The House with a Clock in Its Walls. This is rated pg but I thought it was legit a bit scary! (I would show it to a 12 year old, but maybe not a 7 or 8 year old!).

If they liked Marvel maybe marvel movies that don't take place in the current marvel cinematic universe like the old Spider-man movies or Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Maybe some tv shows with movie-length episodes like Sherlock or Agatha Christie or Poirot.

We watched the Scorsese film Hugo this week. God it's amazing.

We have recently watched Turner and Hooch kids loved it.

Big

Mrs Doubtfire and really any RW comedies. You could watch Fisher King - I think my dc are a bit young for it.

Field of Dreams is lovely.

nevernotstruggling · 28/01/2021 10:52

@saracorona I can cry just thinking about Into The West. The music is fab too. A wonderful film.

CakesOfVersailles · 28/01/2021 10:55

Oh I also forgot all the movies like:

St. Trinian's
Wild Child
What a Girl Wants
She's the Man
Bend it like Beckham

Also they might like period dramas e.g. Emma, The Importance of Being Ernest, An Ideal Husband etc.

Thanks all so much. My viewing is going to be so much better this weekend. 😊

I see Hidden Figures has already got a couple of mentions.

Gnomeo and Juliet
A street cat named Bob
Eddie the Eagle
Ghostbusters (I like the all female remake, with Chris Hemsworth as the "dumb blonde" secretary).

Not sure on certificates, but
Miss Congeniality
Legally Blonde
Nine to Five (prob a 15, but not sure)

CaraDuneRedux · 28/01/2021 11:11

Oh and (someone's probably mentioned these) the Mission Impossible films.

Lurleene · 28/01/2021 11:23

Not films but feature length episodes. Have you watched the Worzel Gummidge remakes? They are all on iplayer. They are really good family viewing, funny and silly but heartwarming too. Just brilliant.

Oh I loved these
Bbq1 · 28/01/2021 12:34

The Theory of Everything
Walk The Line (maybe for the older one)
Life of Pi
Toy story 3

M0rT · 28/01/2021 12:40

The Sandlot Kids
Stand By Me
Wild America
War of the Buttons
These were the films I loved at that age, and my parents were fairly strict on tv being age appropriate so should be ok.
The amount of films I had to pretend I'd seen in school Grin

newlabelwriter · 28/01/2021 14:40

So many here I’d never even heard of. Thank you

A few more faves that have come to mind...

Big
Bugsy Malone
Stardust
Strictly Ballroom
Nutty Professor
A Knights Tale
10 things I hate about you
Clueless

Embroideredstars · 29/01/2021 09:58

Bill & Ted
Planes, trains and automobiles
Goonies
Blues brothers
Fast & furious is fine for 12+
Police academy
Groundhog day
Dead poets society I loved when 14
The Steve Martin films are quite good for that age group

Duel - Stephen Spielberg's first film - a classic dh tells me...

He has watched Cannonball run & Smokey and the bandit with ours and I recall my brothers liking them at that age but I don't like them much, dodgy sexism and racism if you ask me. DS picked up that "chocolate monk" is not a term that is acceptable anymore and he was quite young! But the visual comedy amused them.

MissBattleaxe · 29/01/2021 10:10

This is just the thread I needed! My sons are 11 and 14 and we seem to spend more time arguing about what to watch than we do watching things.

We all liked

Rocky 1,2 and 3
All the Star wars films
The Mandalorian (series)
Ferris Buellers Day Off
Police Academy ( some dodgy implied blow job scenes under a podium)
Enola Holmes
Stranger Things (Too scary for me but the kids liked it) (series not film)
Forrest Gump
ET
All the Jurassic Parks (I love these)
The Meg
Jaws
Fighting with my Family- brilliant and stars The Rock
Jumanji old and new
All the Marvels
MIB
Aladdin (Will Smith again)
Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit

I know it's not a film, but we've all really got into old Grange Hill with Tucker, Benny and the gang!

Wetcappuccino · 29/01/2021 10:18

Little Women
Missing Link
Coraline
The Addams Family
Bill (Horrible Histories)
