What did you do with your wedding dress?

Our loft conversion work starts in a couple of weeks. Currently my dress is hung up in a wardrobe in the loft, but that's being dismantled.

I don't know what to do with it. I love it and felt amazing in it, but realistically I'll never wear it again. I got married 12 years ago, so I'm open to parting with it for a good cause. To make christening gowns maybe?

What did you do with yours?

I donated mine to a charity that make them into little gowns for stillborn babies.

AdobeWanKenobi · 27/01/2021 17:15

Sent it back to the place I hired it from.

Like fuck was I spending that kind of money on a dress for one day when we were scraping for every penny and had just bought a house that needed work.

LApprentiSorcier · 27/01/2021 17:16

It's in a suitcase under my bed. I'll sell it as a vintage item if I ever desperately need the cash.

First one went in the bin.

Second marriage I didn't bother with the dress.

WhatKatyDidNxt · 27/01/2021 17:19

Sold it and spent the money on myself. It was a short lived and unhappy marriage!

pinkbowl · 27/01/2021 17:19

I donated it to a charity shop in my town that has an amazing selection of wedding and prom wear. All at sensible prices. If I'm daft enough to do it again I might have a look in there for dress number 2. 💃

Roselilly36 · 27/01/2021 17:19

I had my wedding dress, shoes etc wrapped up for years in the wardrobe, in the end I though why am I keeping it? Such a waste. I gave it to a charity shop, and I hope it gave another bride, the joy it gave me.

May I ask the charity’s name?

OP, there are a number of businesses that will pack it up for you into a pretty box. Some dry cleaners do it too. That’s what I did - makes it much less bulky. That said, it’s still not a small box - but small enough to be packed away in a cupboard with confidence it isn’t rotting, until I have any better ideas!

merryhouse · 27/01/2021 17:21

I think it's still in the wardrobe at my parents' house, next to my little sister's Grin

Mine was slightly different though, as it had been my mother's.

Do any charity shops still take wedding dresses? I remember one near us had a Wedding Event at one point.

Ebay? (Call it "retro")

GintyMcGinty · 27/01/2021 17:21

Its in the back of the wardrobe in the spare room. Been there 17 years now.

Port1aCastis · 27/01/2021 17:21

I burnt mine in my Parents garden the day my divorce was finalized
Sadly I burnt my Dad's grass in the process Grin

DeusEx · 27/01/2021 17:21

I should say, mine was an Irish wedding - lots of dancing - so the hems aren’t in the best shape! So would need work done to it if it were donated.

wowfudge · 27/01/2021 17:23

Gave mine to charity to a shop with a wedding dress dept

Figgyboa · 27/01/2021 17:23

Donated it to a charity shop

movingonup20 · 27/01/2021 17:24

Recently told my mum to dispose of it, currently getting divorced. We married close to their house and never picked it up (decades)

flossletsfloss · 27/01/2021 17:24

Mine is wrapped in a special wedding box in spare room.

pineapples56 · 27/01/2021 17:24

I gladly sold mine on eBay. Loved wearing it but happy to get some cash back on something I'll never wear again. Besides I don't have the space to hoard and there's zero chance of my sons ever wanting it.

ThanksMateThanksMate · 27/01/2021 17:25

I came across mine while clearing the loft one day ... about a year after my divorce.

I put it on, veil and all and did the rest of the housework wearing it!!

Then when I took the rubbish to the tip, I chucked the dress in last on top of everything with, with a huge flourish and hand wipe!!

(I kept the flowers from my head dress and worked them into DD2's First Holy Communion hairband )

Topseyt · 27/01/2021 17:26

Mine was made by my Mum and is beautiful. She was a very good dressmaker and taught needlework and food tech in a special needs school. She's in her eighties now and quite frail, so I see it as one of her greatest gifts.

For that reason I won't be parting with mine. It has such sentimental value that I couldn't. It is carefully packed with tissue paper in a box in my wardrobe, where it has been for most of the last 27 years.

I've never made up my mind what I will actually do with it, just that I can never part with it.

clary · 27/01/2021 17:26

Yeah I still have mine somewhere. My sister made it and it was lovely but it's not a label dress; also we had a ceilidh so there are a lot of black show polish marks on the hem Grin

I ought to do something with the fabric at least as it is silk tafetta with an overlayer of silk organza which cost about £300 (20+ years ago). I don't know, it's silly to hang on to it really. Especially as it's too big in normal non lockdown days (I married in my 30s and then lost weight after the kids were born)

Thecrashingwaves · 27/01/2021 17:27

Donated it to a charity shop.

ShutUpAlex · 27/01/2021 17:28

My friend sits in hers and drinks wine. She can’t wait for me to join her next year after I get married Grin

RedLlama · 27/01/2021 17:28

My dress was just a pretty summer dress that cost £30. I have worn it several times since for various events 🥰

Panicmode1 · 27/01/2021 17:30

Mine was the most beautiful Sassi Holford gown. I couldn't bear it sitting in the attic, so I sold it and bought some vintage emerald and diamond jewellery. So now, every time I wear it, I can be reminded of my wedding (and we are still very happily together 25 yrs later).

Ohalrightthen · 27/01/2021 17:31

I made mine myself, and will be keeping it incase any of my children like it.
