What did you do with your wedding dress?

Our loft conversion work starts in a couple of weeks. Currently my dress is hung up in a wardrobe in the loft, but that's being dismantled.

I don't know what to do with it. I love it and felt amazing in it, but realistically I'll never wear it again. I got married 12 years ago, so I'm open to parting with it for a good cause. To make christening gowns maybe?

What did you do with yours?

We have an Oxfam locally that has a wedding dress department. They're not taking any donations at all at the moment. I could put it in a suitcase under the bed until the are though (of it fits, it's massive).
My only concern about selling/passing it on is I never had it cleaned, so it's still got all the dirt underneath on it. I planned to do that whole cleaned and boxed thing. But I never got round to it.

@ThanksMateThanksMate That made me laugh!

@AdobeWanKenobi DH and I were discussing this last week. If we got married now, I'd absolutely hire one. Although these days we'd just elope. Just go away for a weekend and come back married, no fuss. But at 27 with no DC, our big wedding was lots of fun.

@BornIn78. That's the sort of thing I had in mind.

Wedding 1 ... White lace creation .... Sold it shortly after the wedding and bought a nice light fitting for the living room with the money. Left it hanging in the house post divorce!

Wedding 2 .... Heavy gold satin dress and bolero jacket .... Still have it (after nearly 18 years), can still get into it (size 10 ... go me!!) and wore it to a wedding in 2019 where it fit the "gold" theme perfectly. (2nd wedding for both ... they both said they'd "struck gold" when they met each other, so had gold as the theme).

@Panicmode1

Mine was the most beautiful Sassi Holford gown. I couldn't bear it sitting in the attic, so I sold it and bought some vintage emerald and diamond jewellery. So now, every time I wear it, I can be reminded of my wedding (and we are still very happily together 25 yrs later).
What a lovely idea :)

Kept mine in a wardobe, it's just a bridesmaids dress in fact - I wore it once since, doesn't fit anymore, probably won't fit my daughter as I think she'll have a totally different figure to me!

Bubbles1st · 27/01/2021 17:36

Well I still had it when I got divorced and turned it into the most amazing corpse bride Halloween outfit. It was both therapeutic and gave it a good purpose.

purrswhileheeats · 27/01/2021 17:37

I sold mine for €100 to a local bridal shop. A year later I saw it on FB, worn by my friend's evil MIL Shock Not long after, evil MIL's husband died - I knew that dress was cursed Grin

Runwayqueen · 27/01/2021 17:38

Gave it to amateur theatre company I was part of. It's been many used times in shows now

idontlikealdi · 27/01/2021 17:39

It's on the back of a door gathering dust. I keep thinking it'll come in handy for some kind of dressing up / fancy dress.

WanderingMilly · 27/01/2021 17:44

I saved mine for years....and then I got divorced. Threw it out. Now a bit sad as I guess I could have sold it or at least given it to charity. I don't miss it though!

Oldraver · 27/01/2021 17:49

Mine is in the dressing up box, sadly or notonly OH can fit in it.

It is nearly 37 years old, and while it isnt Princess Di puffy, there is a lot of polyestery fabric.

GoOutsideAndPlay · 27/01/2021 17:53

Mine was short and pale pink. i dyed it emerald green and used it as a cocktail dress until I put on 3 stone.

BradleyCooperwillbemine · 27/01/2021 17:53

Gave mine to a local am dram theatre. Don't know if it has been used.

lorn195 · 27/01/2021 17:58

@GintyMcGinty I can relate to this as my wedding dress is still at the PILs in their wardrobe and has been for 21 years.

Angel2702 · 27/01/2021 17:59

I Had mine cleaned and boxed up. I love getting my Mums dress out and glad she kept it as a family history keepsake even if it’s never worn again.

Bangable · 27/01/2021 18:00

Mine is in a wedding dress box on a shelf in my dressing room. It is beautiful and holds a lot of sentimental value, I will never part with it. its up there with the dress I bought first and changed my mind

BornIn78 · 27/01/2021 18:03

@DeusEx it was called Angel Gowns, but there’s a number of companies that do it now (just make sure they have a registered charity number).

CeeceeBloomingdale · 27/01/2021 18:05

On the floor of the loft, probably, I can’t remember

DipSwimSwoosh · 27/01/2021 18:10

What's it made of? I took mine to be dry cleaned and they told me they would just put it in an oversized washing machine. So I did that. Now it's in the loft.

SedentaryCat · 27/01/2021 18:15

Boxed up in the loft. Was hanging in the wardrobe for many years but when DD was born I thought I ought to preserve it so that it could be passed on.

There's plenty of fabric in it (full skirt and a train) to have a dress made for her wedding....well, that's if she gets married. If not it can stay boxed up in the loft for the DCs to deal with when I'm gone!

I got married in 1993 so the style is very much of it's time. Not a meringue, but not far off.

Roselilly36 · 27/01/2021 18:19

@Topseyt how lovely, your dress must be very special to you, I have been married 27 years, also this year.

lachy · 27/01/2021 18:25

DD has just asked me if she can wear mine when she gets married.

She's 4. She'll probably change her mind 😊

LadyofMisrule · 27/01/2021 18:29

Charity shop

mnahmnah · 27/01/2021 19:10

Mine is still hung in my Mum’s airing cupboard. I didn’t other getting it cleaned because the layers were all torn at the bottom and stained. Cleaning would have wrecked it more I think! So I can’t pass it on or sell it. I would like to donate it to a charity that makes gowns for stillborn babies too. Last time I looked they weren’t taking any more.

DramaAlpaca · 27/01/2021 19:11

Still up in the attic in a suitcase I think. I haven't looked at it for years. I got married thirty years ago so god knows what sort of a state it's in.

HumourReplacementTherapy · 27/01/2021 19:31

Hung it over a chair and DS aged 2 drew all over it with wax crayon. Grin
It's in a bag somewhere.....
