What did you do with your wedding dress?

Our loft conversion work starts in a couple of weeks. Currently my dress is hung up in a wardrobe in the loft, but that's being dismantled.

I don't know what to do with it. I love it and felt amazing in it, but realistically I'll never wear it again. I got married 12 years ago, so I'm open to parting with it for a good cause. To make christening gowns maybe?

What did you do with yours?

Mine's still in a dress cover in the loft. I did have a notion that I would have it made strapless and cut down to midi prom length and dyed. Needless to say I haven't.

2anddone · 12/03/2021 20:15

I donated mine to cherished gowns

elliejjtiny · 12/03/2021 20:18

I donated mine to a charity that gives wedding dresses to terminally ill brides.

@hazandduck I’m so glad I did it, something special that will stay in the family 💕

Mine was a skirt and bustier two piece in silvery bluey grey so I've actually worn both parts seperately various times. It was from the bridesmaid section and not expensive but very lovely. The long veil is in a cupboard somewhere with head dress. Come to think of it, the veil was more expensive than the dress.

I can only think of these options for wedding dresses:

Keep it forever.
Sell it.
Give it to charity.
Upcycle it.
Burn it (should the marriage go tits up, as many do).

Sparklingbrook · 12/03/2021 20:52

Keep it forever

Well until your DC chuck it out when you're gone. Grin

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 12/03/2021 20:55

It went in a skip after spending over a decade crumpled up at the bottom of a wardrobe in a garment bag Hmm

Grimbelina · 12/03/2021 20:55

I am keeping it for my daughter!

TangerineGreen · 12/03/2021 21:08

Mine is vacuum packed in the airing cupboard. Always planned on selling it straight after as generally not sentimental but the wedding was the last time is saw my dad well (brain injury 6 weeks later) so I couldn’t even wash it... still has the grass stains on the inside of the train. No idea what I’ll do with it but for now I can’t part with it x

LolaNova · 12/03/2021 21:11

Is it bad that I have no idea? It must be at my parents house somewhere!

Leah2005 · 12/03/2021 22:02

Both (!) of mine are in the loft. A friend gave me her dress to make into gowns for babies burn sleeping. I made 11 little dresses but it was a lot harder than I thought it would be for many different reasons. I don't have the emotional energy to do it again.

Leah2005 · 12/03/2021 22:03

Oh goodness - I pressed post then noticed my error. Apologies - *born sleeping.

RandomUsernameHere · 12/03/2021 22:08

Kept it, but mine isn't specifically a wedding dress so I can wear it again. I haven't worn it again so far though, I really should!

FolkyFoxFace · 12/03/2021 22:11

Not very helpful, but I didn't want a white dress. I had it designed so that it could be worn for the wedding but other occasions - it's very long and elegant, so not a wearing to the pub dress, but I wear it every year for our anniversary.

My friend did get a white dress, and she had hers professionally dyed afterwards so that she could do the same thing! It was her 30th in the first lockdown so we both dressed in our wedding dresses and had a very, very fancy zoom party. Grin

KurtWilde · 12/03/2021 22:13

Mine isn't a conventional wedding dress (deep scarlet satin) so I'm hanging on to it for if I ever attend a formal occasion.

dayswithaY · 12/03/2021 22:32

Threw it in a skip. Amazing feeling.

WitchDancer · 12/03/2021 22:43

I donated mine to Bonnie Babies to be made into gowns for stillborn babies. They sent me back a little bag they made out of it to remind me of my dress, which I have put in my wedding memories box.

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 13/03/2021 00:48

My first, fluffy white meringue dress was rented. Just as well really, it was an emergency replacement a week before the Day as my original choice was ruined by the previous bride to wear it!
Second was a black velvet, knee length, short sleeved button through. I would have worn it to go out in but lent it to my friend and never got it back.
My third one, I still have, and wear occasionally. It's a silver Holy Clothing floor length dress with Celtic embroidery.

Jericha · 13/03/2021 09:38

Donated it to the wishing well foundation, they organise weddings for terminally ill men and women.

Wormwoodgal · 20/03/2021 19:19

This ingenious lady made a lockdown wedding dress into 33 beautiful bags to give to people who couldn’t attend the wedding (scroll down to see it:

@elliejjtiny

I donated mine to a charity that gives wedding dresses to terminally ill brides.
So did I. The collection point was walking distance from our house 😄
MintyCedric · 20/03/2021 23:27

Stored it in the loft for 13 years then donated to the Textiles dept at the school where I work when I got divorced.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 21/03/2021 15:06

Stuffed it in a carrier bag and donated it to charity after I divorced the twat.

Happier than I've ever been now 😊
