Do fitness instructors get their left & right confused?

I'm doing Zoom classes at the moment (lots of squats) and was idly wondering about the knock-on effects of mirroring the class and so saying left leg while moving your right etc. Do fitness instructors have more crashes /are they worse at navigating than everyone else? Does anyone else wonder this, or are you a fitness instructor who gets mixed up outside work?

I've noticed my yoga teacher do it an odd time, although she doesn't seem to in RL.

I used to be a fitness instructor many, many moons ago (late 80s to 90s) and can honestly say that this was never a problem for me, in class or out of it.

What did make me start to confuse the two was moving abroad to a country where you drive on the right. After numerous run-ins with DH, I quickly gave up on using left and right to navigate and switched to just 'your way' or 'my way' depending on whether I was driving or the passenger Blush.

Good to know it's not been a problem, general direction errors notwithstanding!

I teach on Zoom and Facebook and get confused as mirroring on Zoom but on Facebook it's the opposite as I am looking at the screen.

TaVeryMuchLove · 26/01/2021 20:23

Yes. I used to get mine mixed up all the time for that reason.

dementedpixie · 26/01/2021 20:23

I was going to say that fb and zoom mirror differently. Must get confusing if using both

Teachers get confused too.
Trying to explain an origami task to a class of 7 year olds on a Japanese day nearly finished me off.
Teaching knitting was another high point in confusion of left and right.

No, doesn't affect me at all outside the gym. Only when I participate in the fitness class myself, so used to starting the combinations with left

Yes all the time 😂 I'm used to teaching with my back to students ... (Mirrors) so teaching facing them and having to use the opposite body parts taxes my brain 😂

My yoga teacher had dyslexia, she naturally mirrored and gave us the right direction.
However she often gave anatomically interesting instructions, but we knew what she meant.

Most years I go to an international fitness convention. Top of the industry presenters, but some with no or minimal English. You know they're great when they get a hall of people following by body language rather than verbal language. A lot of it is about getting the signal in your routine in the right moment for the audience to process and do.

Erin on Five Parks Yoga occasionally gets them mixed up. Seems like it'd be easy to do, but I'd basically forgive Erin anything.
