Honeymoon in the UK

We got married last year however our honeymoon was cancelled. We know going abroad wont happen this year and probably chances of a UK break are pretty slim however I love researching holidays so to torture myself (as chances are we probably won't even get a UK break) I'd love some recommendations for places we could maybe visit.

We have time off in July and September so hopefully both would have ok weather.

Only things i need to mention are we don't drive so we'd need somewhere that has a train station and are willing to then get a taxi from there if need be. We are close to Edinburgh and Glasgow airports (but I really don't fancy flying) We love good food (im vegetarian) and walks so both would be nice to experience.

Please indulge me in all the lovely places you've been. And please no comments on whether you think we will actually get away as i know its uncertain and also even if we are allowrd but covid cases seem high (to us) then chances are we will decide not to go. This is all just for best case scenario!

The Lake District - it's scenic, lovely walks and beautiful places to stay.

Is the Lake District easy to get to from train stations. It's somewhere I've alway liked the look of but it always seems so remote!

Harrogate or york? You can get there easily by train and both easy to navigate on foot it by taxi, York especially has lots of history and both have a great restaurants museums and spas (after Covid lol)

FluffyPersian · 26/01/2021 14:44

I'd agree with @nelly

Harrogate - We had our Honeymoon in North Yorkshire in 2018 and it was absolutely wonderful and exactly what we wanted.

We went to Bettys for Afternoon Tea, we ate amazing food, we also drove to Whitby, went to Whitby Abbey, had fish and chips, we went on an Alpaca trek and just did random fun things. I love North Yorkshire so much (we got married at Fountains Abbey) we're hoping to move nearer there in 4 years time and every year we go back for a holiday, even if it's just for 3-4 days.

Wonderful, wonderful place and lovely people

Ive been to Leeds and visited York for the day. Not with my husband though. Somewhere i never thought of but actually could be a great shout as I loved it when I was there. I love the idea of an alpaca trek!

DH and I had a romantic getaway via train in the Lake District. We caught the mainline to Oxenholme and from there caught a train to Windermere (20 mins). We stayed at the Gilpin. Six of the suites come with their own private garden and hot tubs. It has two restaurants, one of which has a Michelin star.

rogueantimatter · 26/01/2021 16:54

I haven't been there myself, but if York appeals you might enjoy browsing holiday things for Bath.

MinnieMountain · 26/01/2021 16:55

DH and I are staying here for our 10th wedding anniversary:

Train to Windermere then a 20 minute taxi. The food is good in a hearty way . There are lots of walks from the hotel.

Or look at the Hope Valley train line that runs from Sheffield. Lots of lovely walking around there.

DonLewis · 26/01/2021 16:56

Vegetarian? City break (transport)?

Brighton!

Roselilly36 · 26/01/2021 17:01

Southampton Harbour Hotel & Spa is lovely, we stayed in one of their suites for a very special wedding anniversary. Lovely room, staff couldn’t do enough to help, amazing breakfast. Congrats OP.

HGC2 · 26/01/2021 17:05

Could you even just do a wee treat to Gleneagles? Lovely to arrive by train and it is one of the best places in Scotland we have stayed and eaten! Might even be possible if travel still restricted!

Plump82 · 26/01/2021 18:24

All these suggestions sound fab. Im looking forward to properly researching them.

@Roselilly36 that hotel looks gorgeous. And thank you!

@HGC2 never ever considered Gleneagles. Ill look into that as it would be a pretty special place! And as you say, closer to home may be easier.

@DonLewis Brighton was the 1st place we went on holiday together. It was a bit of a disaster start to finish. Flight there was delayed by about 6 hrs so missed our 1st day.. I got horrendous sunburn. Then on the way home our flight was cancelled and we had to travel to another airport to travel with another airline only to be told we were on stand by and the flight was full. There may have been tears! So maybe that could be somewhere to make new, happy memories!

@Fivemoreminutes1 thats exactly the type of place we'd love to go to. It looks stunning! And the fact there's a spa and hot tubs would be the icing on the cake.

@rogueantimatter Bath is somewhere i know nothing about so will research it more.

From Edinburgh/Glasgow then York is really easy. There are great hotels and restaurants there, and loads to do and see. And some of the hotels have nice spas.

Plump82 · 27/01/2021 11:47

We've decided on York and have booked a fabulous hotel. Im just hoping we can actually go!
