Liquid for cut flowers

Just been asked by a little one I look after - can flowers (cut, bouquets etc) live in anything other than water e.g. orange juice, milk or champagne?

I remember my mum adding a teaspoon of sugar or half an aspirin to the water sometimes but couldn't really answer this particular question!

Why not use it as an experiment and see what happens

Good idea - I can do the milk and orange juice but would prefer to keep champagne for my drinking, not that of the flowers!

We now have half a dozen daffodils in a jam jar full of milk. It looks really odd but they are not drooping or anything, yet!

Pretty sure my mum used to use lemonade for flowers - I guess for the same thinking as yours adding sugar. Don't know if it made a big difference though

lemonade. According to the Good Housekeeping Institute, testers discovered that a little lemonade in the water of the vase you're keeping your flowers in can “work wonders”. ... “The mix of acid and sugar helps to stop bacteria and therefore helps the life of your flowers

I always add lemonade to my flowers.

Update - the daffs in milk didn't last as long as they would in water and the smell wasn't good after a few days on warm window ledge, so that's a no. Didn't have any lemonade so now experimenting with daffs in tonic water .....
