I posted this in 90 days only by mistake so am reposting here for traffic. Smile

I read a book years ago and can’t remember the title, the author or indeed much of the plot. I hope that somebody can come to my rescue!

I think I probably read it around 20 years ago although I don’t think it was a new title then. I think the author was female, although I can’t swear to that.

It was set in Scotland during the time of the plague (1350ish?) and the main character was a young woman who was in charge of a town/castle. She had a small child who had gone somewhere with a nurse/servant of some description. The child and their companion returned to the town but had plague symptoms so the mother refused to allow them entry and left them in some sort of tent outside the walls to their fate. I can’t remember if the child survived. I think it was a daughter aged around seven but again I can’t be sure.

And that is literally all I can remember! If it rings a bell for anybody I’d be most grateful - it’s driving me mad.

TIA. Smile

@RatHammock I'm afraid I can't help, I tried Googling "plague scotland novel" Amazon didn't bring up any possibilities, then found a website that was a guide to historical fiction, no go there either - I think it might have been a US site - then I tried AbeBooks and went through 8 pages of Scotland and plague before giving up. You might try Booksleuth on AbeBooks if you haven't already. Good luck!

Thanks anyway, I will have a look at Booksleuth. Smile

I thought of The Doomsday Book by Connie Willis but do not think that is set in Scotland.

RatHammock · 26/01/2021 13:03

It might not even be set in Scotland, to be perfectly honest. Grin

Not quite right, but maybe - a woman who refuses to allow family member (husband) into the city walls during the Plague

FlibbertyGiblets · 26/01/2021 14:23

Is it Kingdom of Shadows by Barbara Erskine?

rbe78 · 26/01/2021 14:35

Or one of these maybe?

Is it one of the Ken Follet series? It rings a bell....

RatHammock · 26/01/2021 18:24

Thanks everyone. @FlibbertyGiblets - I think that might be it! Though I don’t remember any time travel in it. I’m going to download it now. Thank you. Smile
