I would say just think of her interests and go with that. The best presents are thoughtful and specific to the person based on their likes and personality.
Whatever you do don’t go with a 40th engraved glass or the like. There is nothing more boring and less thoughtful.

Vouchers for a favourite restaurant that might still be doing takeaways? And a bottle of bubbly?

Afternoon tea voucher for somewhere posh that's valid for 12 months (or more).

Anything in the past that she's mentioned she'd like?

As someone who is 40 later in the year, I’d say get something based on things you know they love. Don’t worry whether it’s special enough, big enough or expensive enough. Make it personal.

Flower delivery subscription?
Absolutely agree with the person who said that she won't want engraved 40th birthday tat!
Personally think fizz is vastly over-rated and would prefer a few decent bottles of red.
Don't try too hard to be 'original' as it rarely works.

I think you are right not to get a voucher. Celebrations are already postponed, I'd want a present that gave instant gratification. How about one or more 3 month subscriptions for gin/chocolate brownies/flowers/magazines to keep her going through lockdown? What does she like? I would appreciate a lovely new houseplant in a nice pot or a voucher I could spend on some artwork but she might hate those so a clue on interests would help.

I would love a flower subscription right now as someone working from home so there a lot. Bloom and wild and the like do lots of different durations.

This ones looks nice and money left over for a bottle of bubbles or nice tea and cake selection if she's not a drinker

Something that fits with her likes, but costs more than she would usually spend?

  • stationery
  • lotions/potions
  • champagne/gin/wine

Other possibilities...
  • Bluetooth speaker
  • wireless headphones
  • Disney+ subscription for a year
  • a nice phono frame with a photo of you both

It's my 40th very soon.

Is anyone likely to get her a cake? I probably won't get one unless I buy/cook it myself, which makes me sad. Depends how near you are.

A photo album of memories would be lovely, and a phonecall on the day would be perfect for me!
