Why are music stars left wing?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 21/01/2021 15:40

Lady Gaga yesterday.

Tony Blair hobnobbing with Oasis.

I remember the Red Wedge. Loads of stars in it.

No one except the Beach Boys have any right wing tendencies.

This is a good thing of course, but just wondered why!

I think Joe Biden is "left" as far as US politics goes, but compared to the UK, he's still pretty conservative.

I think all the hobnobbing at No 10 when Blair got elected was more to do with the whole "Cool Britania" Britpop thing going on at the time and Labour ushering in a new era.

I've not heard of the Red Wedge.

A quick Google of right wing pop stars brought up this (very old) article: www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/music/2007/oct/14/popandrock2

I think it's because they are intelligent and think about things.

You're going to get offered a whole selection of biscuits for this one 😂
DecemberSun · 21/01/2021 15:58

OOOh goody. ;)

Right wing musician aren't awfully bright in m experience.

LegoPirateMonkey · 21/01/2021 15:59

I guess people in the arts might be more likely to suffer from the effects of right wing policies.

AuntieMarys · 21/01/2021 16:03

Morrissey isn't

Cam2020 · 21/01/2021 16:04

I think creative people tend to have more empathy in general and will be left leaning, but the big stars are often completely blind to the fact that they are actually out of touch with what 'normal' life is like for anyone and it ends up sounding patronising.

Then there are those who think it makes them cool and relatable and those who are downright hypocrites and pontificate to others whilst tax dodging themselves.

Janaih · 21/01/2021 16:08

Johnny ramone was right wing. Its one of the reasons he and Joey Ramone didn't get on. Or even speak to each other for years.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 21/01/2021 16:10

Brian from the Backstreet Boys isn't left wing at all, if that makes any difference 😂😂

SkepticalCat · 21/01/2021 16:14

Gary Barlow supported David Cameron during the 2010 election campaign.

TheSpottedZebra · 21/01/2021 16:16

Garth Brookes is a passionate Republican, as are loads of country stars. He joked that he'd be the only one at the inauguration. Interestingly, he sung at Obama's inauguration too, but not Trump's. Trump could only muster a few nomarks.

Isnt a Spandau Ballet chap a huge Tory? And also, er...

There is that saying that people get more right wing as they age, and music stars tend to be younger. And when they've made their money and become tax exiles, they probably keep quiet.

FenEel · 21/01/2021 16:17

When I think of right wing musicians I think - whether fairly or unfairly - of Morrissey, Carol Decker, Ginger Spice.

Yes! And didn't Jason orange leave TT partly due to the others' use of tax avoidance schemes. Which suggests that he is more left leaning than the rest of the band.
peak2021 · 21/01/2021 16:21

There have been several musicians who have campaigned for country 'sports', hardly a left wing cause.

RizzleDrizzle · 21/01/2021 16:21

Gary Barlow is a pretty outspoken Tory in fact I think he’s a Tory donor,(he pays the Tory party but not his taxes, pretty Tory thing to do isn’t it)

TheSpottedZebra · 21/01/2021 16:22

Brian Ferry for one. Who else?

A quick Google suggest that Bill Wyman is also a Tory. And possibly Kate Bush.

You can add Rick Wakeman and Roger Daltrey to that list. Admittedly hardly this years model.
JustCallMeGriffin · 21/01/2021 16:27

There are enough right wing musicians out there...but at least pretending to be left wing can make them more marketable to their target market.

I think there are more musicians who like to talk the talk than actually do something about it.

Musicians like Jon Bon Jovi who will happy filter their own money into endeavours like JBJ Soul Kitchens to try and make a difference for those who need it are few and far between. Many like to 'campaign', few will put their own money towards something worthwhile.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 21/01/2021 16:27

Morrisey wasn’t always a racist twat, l saw him at a Rock Against Racism gig in the 80’s

The Red Wedge was a group of left wing bands who supported left wing causes in the 80’s.

From memory, Eric Clapton tends to the right too.

FatherTedsBankAccount · 21/01/2021 16:33

Queen (my favourite band, incidentally) were lambasted in the day for playing Apartheid-ridden South Africa and for recording in Switzerland for tax-haven reasons. But Brian May certainly seems pretty left-leaning these days (socially/ animal rights-wise more than fiscally, perhaps).

LickEmbysmiling · 21/01/2021 16:34

Simpley Red!

Johnny Rotten however was screaming out - Fuck u Jeremy Corybyn - for balance...

LickEmbysmiling · 21/01/2021 16:36

I know a few musicians - and they are definitely the most compassionate people and more swing voters than very left or right.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 21/01/2021 16:37

Johnny Rotten supports Trump🤮. Anarchy in the truest sense l suppose !

Just a bit. From Guardian: " A drunk Clapton spoke out in support of Enoch Powell at a gig in Birmingham in 1976. 'I think Enoch's right ... we should send them all back. Throw the wogs out! Keep Britain white!'. His reported remarks were a factor in the creation of Rock Against Racism. "

He also owns, or part owns, a shotgun brand.
