Smart Heating

I'm thinking of getting a smart thermostat that I can control from my phone. I am so clueless about them. From a quick search it seems like Hive, Nest and Tado are the main ones.

Hive it seems you need the hub to go with it. The latest reviews for Tado are that you need to pay a monthly subscription for the latest V3. Nest looks uncomplicated.

So what works for you? Is it easy to install yourself? I literally just want to turn my heating on/off remotely as I work crazy shifts (and have a new housemate who never remembers to turn it off). I have a combi-boiler which is only a few years old.

I also rent so would I be able to take it with me if I ever have to leave?

We've got a Nest, it does have a hub as well as the thermostat, the hub has to be wired in (fitting was included in the purchase price) the thermostat can just be connected by wifi to it and plugged into a socket. It has a lot more smart features than just turning on and off remotely but we found them all so annoying we switched them off.

If the WiFi breaks can you use nest mannually.

We been waiting for our installation for hive since November and it’s now been pushed back to March. So thinking of a nest

We have Tado ones - the controller, plus a smart thermostat on each radiator as we want to heat different areas of our home at different times. We find the normal app fine without a monthly subscription. It works well.
