Fake Halifax messages scam warning

DK123 · 20/01/2021 21:59

Just wanted to warn fellow MNetters there's a fake Halifax scam text a lot of people are getting this evening.

It claims someone's tried to set up a new payee. I checked with Halifax and they always put part of your name/account no/address in genuine messages and this one doesn't have it.

I've reported it and so did my friend who got the same message too.

I wanted to warn others who see this as the scammers are busy this evening.

Thanks for flagging this up

Dp literally just told me he had received one 5 minutes before I saw this thread.

DK123 · 20/01/2021 22:18

@user1471464702 thank you for letting us know.

If anyone's seen any other scams recently (and to keep the thread bumped so hopefully more MNetters will see it and be forewarned) please share any info about texts/calls/emails going round at the moment.

I do worry about elderly and vulnerable people who might not be as aware of scams so please warn friends or relatives you think might not be wary of such messages!

I had one of these texts just 5 minutes ago. I knew it was a scam because I don't have a Halifax account.

I had an email the other day purporting to be from the Royal Mail who were unable to deliver my parcel because I had not addressed it correctly. I had sent a parcel to my daughter a couple of days before so I was about to click the link then realised I have never put my email address on anything to do with Royal Mail!

bluecheesefan · 20/01/2021 22:30

My DD got a text purporting from Halifax the other day, she's deleted it now so I can't check, but I think it was a different one to that.

Begonias · 20/01/2021 22:39

You can forward scam text messages to 7726, I got one last week from HSBC saying I had set up a new payee. I don't have a HSBC account so I forwarded it to their fraud team.

Any scam messages I receive I just keep sending them to the fraud department in the company mentioned in the text. Surely it's in their interest to stop these scammers.

Just lately I had hsbc text scam. I don’t bank with them.
Via email - but straight into junk file has been Royal Mail and dpd parcel delivery scam emails.

Thanks

monkey1978 · 20/01/2021 22:42

Ive just had a very similar one from lloyds too

chomalungma · 20/01/2021 22:42

I got one of those this morning.

It's worrying how many scams there are out there like this and how it just takes a momentary lapse to potentially fall for it.

Begonias · 21/01/2021 11:16

This morning alone I've had 3 calls from international numbers, scammers obviously. They get to the answering machine and hang up. Ring back an hour later with a different number, worrying thing is we are on the TPS list but there bs still get through. I've just put my landline phone on silent. We don't even use our landline, other than schools and gp having the number nobody else has it.
