How do I tell DH he has smelly breath?

He is in denial.

All it will take is a bit of flossing and several glasses of water a day. It is dehydration breath from too much instant coffee and breathing in and out of his mouth. It smells like dog poo. He goes to the dentist so it isn’t bad teeth.

I have tried for years to kindly drop hints but he refuses to believe me and thinks I’m being rude. I want to sleep in the spare room. I’ve had enough.

The time for dropping hints is over. Ffs, his breath is so bad it's driving you out of your bed. Tell him clearly his breath is horrible and if he won't remedy it, you should sleep in the spare room.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 20/01/2021 18:58

You say "ffs your breath stinks, go brush and floss your teeth".

TerribleCustomerCervix · 20/01/2021 19:00

“Your breath is pretty smelly”

I don’t understand how people can have sex with someone but telling them something that is easily fixable (brush teeth and drink water) gives them an attack of the vapours.

Just tell him. I don't know how you've put it with it for years, if my dh waits an extra ten minutes in the morning to brush his teeth I'll push for it (he has terrible morning breath) even though he's not bad with his dental hygiene.
It really does just take a quick 'your breath is super smelly, go brush and use the mouthwash'

BobbinThreadbare123 · 20/01/2021 19:02

My XH was like this. It wasn't even coffee as he didn't drink it. It was milk. He could sort it if he wanted to ie if he had a big meeting or something. It was just disrespect to me. I think you just have to be blunt; if it is the coffee then that's a good way to broach it.

Jetatyeovilaerodrome · 20/01/2021 19:02

Honestly, just say 'your breath smells'. He is your husband, you should be able to say stuff like that to him.

That's horrible! Glad he is your ex!

LindaEllen · 20/01/2021 19:05

DP and I tell each other if our breath smells (usually due to what we've been eating) and we're grateful - we don't want to go out and about with smelly breath and it's better to know then you can fix it! Just tell him!

metalkprettyoneday · 20/01/2021 19:06

Why drop hints with your husband? Just tell him , directly and honestly , I mean who wouldn’t want to know.
I want my partner to tell me if I smell or if there!s a hair growing out of my chin so that I can deal with it.

BornIn78 · 20/01/2021 19:07

he refuses to believe me and thinks I’m being rude

So he is aware of it then?

“DH, I’ve tried to raise this with you before, you are aware, I’m sorry if this upsets you but your breath smells and it’s become unbearable, it smells like dog poo, it’s strong, it’s noticeable and it’s unpleasant. If you don’t sort it now that I’ve told you straight, you’re going to have to move into the spare bedroom”.

MoodyMarshall · 20/01/2021 19:07

Buy an electric toothbrush/water pick flosser and tell him he needs to brush both sides of his teeth and the very back teeth for the full two minutes. Send him a video on how to do it properly.

RevIMJolly · 20/01/2021 19:12

Are you sure it’s not tonsil stones? They can cause horrible breath.

JillBidensShoes · 20/01/2021 20:25

I’ve wondered about to tonsil stones and asked him to raise it with his dentist but am not sure of the outcome.

DH does not believe that he has bad breath. That is the crux of the matter.

I would be grateful if someone told me that I had bad breath/ had a chin hair / had loo roll on my shoe etc etc. To me, that shows you care.

MrsPerfect12 · 20/01/2021 20:30

He needs a decent mouthwash. Try ultradex. He needs to gargle to rid himself of tonsil stones and keep it up at twice a day. I couldn't put up with that either. Eventually the ick will come. X

Pinkyandthebrainz · 20/01/2021 20:33

Go sleep in the spare room and dont go near him. He'll soon act.

Canyoncall · 20/01/2021 20:33

This has been going on years OP? Tonsil stones would have shifted by now. "dog poo" breath would indicate not bacterial (like T stones). More likely sinus/ENT or other issue. Why is he not thanking you for telling him?

ThisWasMe2021 · 20/01/2021 20:35

Tell him to lick the back of his hand, and let it dry for a minute. Then get him to smell it.

He's rank. And disrespectful.

silverbubbles · 20/01/2021 20:41

My husband told me my breath stank of dog shit. My children told me. I knew I had bad breath. It was becoming an issue I thought I must have a serious problem it was so bad.

I went to the dental hygeinist (hadn't been for several years) and my breath is SO much better. I am now going to go every 6 months for a proper clean. my husband cannot believe the difference.
Get him to hydrate, floss, use those Tp brushes to get between teeth etc
BUT get him to go to the hygienist

SabrinaThwaite · 20/01/2021 21:29

Has he been checked out for a nasal bacterial infection? That would cause bad breath.

JillBidensShoes · 20/01/2021 22:10

This does not work and I asked my own dentist about this. She said that you can never smell your own bad breath (I needed fillings and was hyper sensitive about getting bad breath).

He is in flat denial. Won’t accept what I say.

MossandRoy · 20/01/2021 22:14

Poor you. My ex was rank too. Did nothing about it, it was one of the reasons why I left.

Deathraystare · 21/01/2021 08:15

Worked for me. Usually not hydrated enough.

Ask him why he thinks you're lying to him.
Eileithyiaa · 21/01/2021 08:21

What about when he puts a mask on?
I've put a mask on to go supermarket before now and been met with a whiff of my own coffee breath. The toothbrush came out as soon as I got home.

Next time you catch a whiff of the pong, have him shove a mask on and inhale his own fumes 😂

Popsy321 · 21/01/2021 08:32

Coffee breath is vile and does smell like dog poo. You'd think he'd be mortified. Not sure where you go from here though if he refuses to address it, other than to continue sleeping in the spare room.
