If you bought your DC the Mario Lego for Christmas....

... how’s it going?
I am contemplating it as a birthday present for my DC.

DS (5) tends to play with toys in a “zoom around the room like a mad thing” kind of way so I was unsure whether this was right for him. It seems like the play is very prescriptive, you move Mario along the course like you’re supposed to and no other way. DS is still in the stage where all his cars get flown through the air/driven up the walls/etc.

However they both (DD is 7) absolutely adore both Mario and Lego, so it seems like I’m missing a really obvious super present if I don’t get them this!

How’s it going down with everyone else’s DC? Is it still being played with a month later?

Also, I assume you don’t need a tablet to actually play, just for the building instructions, is that right?

Thanks in advance!

My 6yo DS loves his! He is a very organised player though so it on board with Mario going along the course, he loves collecting the coins and the interactions with other characters.

The starter kit isn't much (he got that for his birthday to see if he would play with it), but he also got 2 expansions for Christmas (one from us, one from my mum) and it's his favourite toy at present!

The tablet/app is just for building, but also for updating Mario's firmware via Bluetooth from time to time (which I do from my phone).

Mario can do whatever - your DS could make a 'course' from household items/up the stairs/whatever he wanted if he felt so inclined! Your DD may get more out of how it's supposed to be played Smile

Thank you that’s very helpful! Yes it looked as though the starter set was a taster really.
Anyone out there got any recommendations for best expansion?

DS is obsessed with Yoshi so he has that one, but it doesn't do masses really. His grandma got him the guarded fortress one, but having looked at them and knowing now what they do, Whomp’s Lava Trouble / Wiggler’s Poison Swamp look entertaining (lots of lava and drowning respectively!)

DS nearly 5 had been building it up over the last few months and he got Bowser's castle for Christmas. He loves it. But he plays with Lego in quite a prescriptive way, won't deviate from the booklets so this has been perfect for him.

We got it at launch, add ons fir Christmas and jan birthday! It's still a daily fixture!

But I also have Mario and Lego obsessed boys, it is a no brainier!

Right. I’m going for it for DS’s birthday then. I felt like we under-spent at Christmas and I felt a bit guilty, so going all out on birthday presents this year!! Grin

Thanks again!

We have it and they love it here. The starter kit isn't enough so deffo buy the expansion kits. We also used a ikea table to build it on and keep it. So that's something to think about.
