Medical leeches are still used today, they are farmed in sterile conditions (in Wales, I think), and are excellent at relieving bleeding in body tissues. Especially useful after surgery to delicate tissues such a facial skin grafts etc.

Brilliant thread OP. I got a model of a scraper loader which appears to be for scraping rocks in open cast mining.

Are you all scrolling down for the related items? I got a load more mining related items, including a Davy safety lamp, which is all great as my dad, and pretty much all my older male relatives were miners. I'm also in industrial safety myself and find all this stuff fascinating. The best thing I got in the related items was a canary resuscitator Shock.

@OhYouBadBadKitten

Who knew a miners pay check looked like that?
It was probably the thing they handed over to get their wage packet.

Checks are commonly used in mining and other dangerous occupations as ways of counting people in and out of dangerous areas.

Each worker is issued with a unique token, or check. They hand the check in when they enter the area and it is hung on a board. They collect it when they leave.

Of course, if something bad happens while they are in the mine, the board gives them a list of how many workers they need to try and rescue Sad.

The pay checks would have been a way of keeping track of who had been given their wages in times when they were paid in cash and many might not have been able to read and write.

The Babbage Papers
I was quite disappointed in mine until I looked this up. Charles Babbage 1791-1871 is known as the designer of the first automatic computer. He was also a codebreaker and philosopher. These are the first 2 pages of his work. He never made any of his concepts but one was built in 2002. See pic 3.

@MsAwesomeDragon

This is what I got. That's really interesting.
They had an exhibition on the Romanovs a couple of years ago. It was about the severe haemophilia suffered by the last Tsar's son, which out the mother in thrall to Rasputin for a cure. She also suffered badly from Mental health issues so there were things about the treatment across the country for that too. The family had volunteered for nursing in WW1 and some uniforms etc on show. For when life gets back to normal I can recommend the exhibitions On the top floor at the science Museum usually free and not very busy
