I absolutely agree you should not eat things after the Use by date : Meat , Fish etc
Best before dates I class as more advisory , we use our common sense so if it looks ok , smells ok, and tastes ok - it's ok.
But what item of food have you eaten that was out of date and you lived to tell the tale and how out of date was it .
Ours was last week , we ate a jar of Bali curry sauce Best Before date 2015 . No after effects .

So many I can't remember! I often don't look at the dates on sauces, spices etc - I was using mustard for a recipe yesterday and vaguely looked at the date - 2008 !

Lasagne sheets - 2017
Christmas pudding - 2015 (soaked in brandy before cooking...)

Oh yes dried things such as pasta , daft to have dates on imo.
At the start of the first Lockdown I sorted out the cupboards , and came across a ten year old pack of green tea, I finished that off and whilst not very flavoursome , it didn't kill me.

Christmas cake / pud improves with age !

After my gran died I inherited her spice collection, some of the price label were pre decimalisation! I’m still alive!!

We were renovating our flat when I was pregnant with dd before moving in. My mum made me a cup of tea one afternoon and it tasted of what I can only describe as farmyard. Mum checked the date on the bottle and it was the 17th which was fine as it was the 20th. The next day she made another cuppa and it tasted even worse. Checked the date and it was the 17th of the previous month 🤢. Needless to say I was absolutely fine just put off tea for the rest of my pregnancy!
