Here we are again, gaining sequels even more rapidly than the Fast and the Furious...

Don't be sorry, you haven't done anything wrong MrsEWeatherwax. We are on this thread because we are frustrated by what is happening here and it is a place to vent. I hope you have a better day and feel better soon Flowers

AcornAutumn · 23/01/2021 19:35
@AcornAutumn don't be silly! Come up, it's colder but friendlier. That's as a born and bred southerner with an estuary English accent, living in Yorkshire for almost 20 years.

(Unless you're actually related to an MP in which case, stay down there, you bugger! Grin)
My cousins and goddaughter live up north so it was a very real consideration for later life

But this has been off putting. Also, I get the sense that everyone will hate a Londoner turning up and daring to occupy an actual house on her own. Not worth it.

Lostinacloud · 23/01/2021 19:36

I do think the tide is slowly turning. There are now quite a lot more sensible posters on the “other side” and people are starting to grow more aware and equally as fatigued with the endless doom and gloom and over the top propaganda. We can but hope that the push back is starting.

Also these two stories from Europe together with the ASA rulings in the UK also gives me some hope that some government restrictions are at last being challenged (fingers crossed)

@lostinacloud that is extremely interesting and positive re the German courts.

SirSamuelVimes · 23/01/2021 19:53

Honestly, @AcornAutumn, I live in North Yorkshire so it's a pretty straight talking bunch around here. I can't imagine anyone having an issue with someone moving up here from London. We'd probably just think you had a good head on your shoulders picking North over South!

GarlandaChynoweth · 23/01/2021 20:02

The guilt tripping about the number of key worker children at school reached a new high this week. I went begging to the head on day 2 of closures for a place for DS1 on mental health grounds as he suffered so much with six months out of school last year. She offered me a key worker day a week for all three DC. DH (the key worker) is financial services so not 'proper' and I'm not a key worker, I'm civil service. 30-40% of kids are attending this time, compared to less than 10% in last lockdown. I've had to cut back to 25% of my hours to do the home schooling when the kids are here. I feel guilty about taking the place for the younger two DC and cutting down my hours but it's the only thing making it bearable. My mental health is on a knife edge, I just feel like I can't cope with the sense of the DC being excluded from education again because I don't have the right job and judging by the number of DC across all schools this time, I'm not the only one.

The head assured me she wouldn't have offered the place (a whole day a week) if she didn't think we should take it. But we've just had this dreadful dementory letter from the Chair of Governors. No acknowledgement of mental health of parents or kids, vulnerable children, the fact that although the online learning provision is impressive it's not a full-time or long-term substitute for face to face education, or the fact that parents are working, both they and DC have already made huge sacrifices over the last year, and not everyone can facilitate the work or force the DC to engage. Apparently 'many parents have expressed concern at the numbers in school and the infection risk this poses'. She claims 'she knows we would wish to know that due to the numbers staff are mixing across bubbles'. Who the fuck cares. There's also the threat of 'I am sure you would not want to risk the new more transmissible variant entering your family via school'. To be honest I'd rather that than us all in tears day after day and DS1 unable to get out of bed in the morning or sleep at night. Plus governors have a duty of care to staff etc (no mention of the poor DC), if staff have to isolate it will jeopardise school places for critical workers, and the online provision, we should only send DC in if we are critical carers (not even sure what that means, but nothing in the government guidance) and on and on. Awful shaming, why did it need to go to all parents to cause more divisions and guilt tripping?

DH is preparing a response.

110APiccadilly · 23/01/2021 20:03

That's brilliant Jourdain. And I like your DD's style.

GarlandaChynoweth · 23/01/2021 20:04

Oh, and school has had one covid case...staff member in half term, so not caught or transmitted at school Hmm

TabbyStar · 23/01/2021 20:09

I am currently looking for a job and they are advertising for covid compliance marshals

I dunno, you could walk around saying, "you don't need to wear your mask outside take some nice deep breaths of fresh air", "why don't you let your kids play in the playground with the others?" or "it's fine to chat with your neighbours in their garden, have a good day!"

Went up to York for a wedding back in 2010 and found people so welcoming and friendly and up for a laugh. My weight had gone up again and not one word about it or nasty comment. From anyone.

‘Don’t blame public for overloaded hospitals,’ Covid ICU medics tell NHS staff

MercyBooth · 23/01/2021 20:15

About time @LivinLaVidaLoki The blaming of the public by some medics on Twitter has been going on for MONTHS

I'm not far from York. It's a nice bit of the world. Maybe when this shit is all over we should try to do an AD pub meet up.

I've been thinking about the north/south shit on here

Obviously I'm in a frail state of mind (always have to get a song title in)....but people saying the north is friendly....i'm sure it is but equally London, New York and Essex are all very friendly in my view.

One of the oddest things about this situation is you can't make long term plans anymore and resentment will be entrenched even more.

Of course, one potential positive is that london population will be back to a more manageable level as people leave.

I can't shake the feeling that leaving means a constant load of "banter" about "you're not from here" which has a double meaning with my skin colour.

Jeez, today has been such a depressing day.

Wishfulthinking1977 · 23/01/2021 20:52

Great news jourdain! and hugs to everyone needing them!! I'm in the South and I can definitely see a divide being pushed! I don't entertain such bollocks and no area has done things better than any other! The reason we don't get compliance questioned is we have no police in a 30 mile area! I did put a comment on another thread discussing how much longer people will out up with things and agree that the tide is turning and people are getting fed up! I did notice the same names with the name calling and screeching but on the whole it was very heartening! Love to all, sanity will prevail!! Xx

smallandimperfectlyformed · 23/01/2021 20:53

Tabbystar the area that they want the marshals is in is right in the town centre, in one of the poorest parts of the borough. There are no houses with gardens there, just some tower blocks and then the centre with the town square and shops, banks etc. A proper high street really! What they will want is people enforcing mask wearing at the shops and council buildings but what would worry most is the idea of trying to move the street drinkers out of the town square. It was recently on our local Facebook page that they have moved some street preachers on too - I certainly wouldn't want to argue with them!!

Hi everyone, I am a longtime lurker on these threads (I think I’ve been following the since the very early ones!), and I just want to thank you all for the breath of sanity you have provided me with in these crazy times.

@Jourdain11 great news, and I’m so happy for you!

Evenstar · 23/01/2021 21:14

@Jourdain11 that’s wonderful news 💐

I haven’t been around so much the last few days, I sort of hit a wall on Wednesday and have cut back my news consumption and Mumsnetting, though I agree that there seems to be a growing mood of resentment and unwillingness to comply with continuing lockdown ‘over there’

I have found an app to do jigsaw puzzles on my iPad and it is very good as a distraction, along with less news it is helping.

💐 for all who are struggling x

Gratefulrunner · 23/01/2021 21:38

@GarlandaChynoweth we had a similar letter from the county council sent via school. We spoke with head who said essentially they’d been told to send it out and school was v happy to have our DCs in. So maybe your school has been leant on to send something out ?
And similar outbreak levels in our school - one case since September!

BogRollBOGOF · 23/01/2021 21:39

I'm so pleased for you Jourdain. You really do deserve the upturn in luck, and may it long continue to get better xxx

The best place to go for a quiet, mud-free walk is town, early in the evening. Much less aggro than a park.
(Obviously a sign of how damaging it is for the economy though)
