Jargon does NOT make you look smarter

I hate it. It just gets on my last nerve. You just look like a twat and not smart. A couple of my relatives who always feel the need to show off how smart they are by using words the other person may most likely not know the meaning of. For example

  1. When this person was in the process of buying a house she was using words that my 16 year old sister couldn't understand. Going on about the mortgage and the contract when all she was asked was how is it going. A 'it's all in the works' would have been just fine!
  2. The IKEA friggin' names! I mean really??!!. It's hard enough saying it I don't want to remember the flipping name so I can talk to you about it!
  3. And omg just give me a short and sweet answer when I've asked you something! I don't want an essay full of BS jargon that does not need to exist!

Do you think they're smart or not? Seems to me you're projecting here and they're just being themselves.

Some people are long winded, it can be frustrating but doesn't necessarily mean they're 'showing off'. I think this phrase is now abused and misused.

Anyway good luck with your smart/not smart relatives. You could try telling them to get to the point.
