That when I give someone a friendly smile whilst wearing a mask, it just looks like I'm staring at them.

A smile to acknowledge that one or other of us has moved over in the supermarket, to greet someone as we pass in the corridor at work etc. I'm still doing it under the mask and imagining the little of my face they can see looks smiley, but doesn't!

I smile with my whole face (hence a shitload of wrinkles in my mid 30's) so people can tell I'm smiling at them and they usually smile back.

You can definitely tell when someone is smiling. Mask or not.

Fewer things are more heartening than someone that smiles with their whole face. And you can definitely tell, even behind a mask.

I don't think you can. I only noticed because someone stared/smiled at me today. With glasses on, it really wasn't obvious she was smiling.
