do you have a sofa which you've used every day for 10+ years and is still in good condition

We want to stop buying "disposable" furniture which needs to go to landfill after 5 years. Sofas are the biggest culpret in more ways than one.

But do sofas which remain comfortable for decades exist? I understand, of course, thst they'd need restuffing or something...

If a sofa would really, genuinely, last a life time we do have money to spend on it, although we don't usually splash out. So if money were no object, what would you recommend?

Our sofa from Furniture village is around 10 years old and is still as good as new. They did tell us stuff about the construction of it that made it different to the ones at DFS for example. It has proper back cushions, not scatter cushions.

The only annoying thing is that I've really gone off the pattern now that neutrals are all the rage but it seems too extravagant to buy another one.

I always think those 'squishy' looking ones from loaf won't last a year never mind 10.

Londono · 15/01/2021 13:02

Also, we bought one we could actually talk to a salesperson about and sit on - we didn't want one from an online shop in case it wasn't comfortable.

wellthatsunusual · 15/01/2021 13:05

I had DFS sofas for about 13 years and was able to sell them when we needed something bigger. They still looked great, much like when they were new, although they weren't as firm as they once were obviously. But visuals they were good.

We replaced with sofas that cost about twice as much, from an independent shop, and they are wrecked after about four years.

I was very pleasantly surprised by DFS.

I have a brown leather three piece suite that I bought from (I think) DFS 15 years ago, still going strong

GreenTiles22 · 15/01/2021 13:09

My DFS sofas lasted 10 years wonderfully. I bought replacements in Feb 2020 from Next and they are awful. Saggy, bent cushions, whole things looks old already. Avoid Next sofas at all costs! A quick google review search will confirm.

chipsandpeas · 15/01/2021 13:10

my sofa is 10.5 years old and from SCS and still looks pretty good when i have plumped the cushions

DebbieFiderer · 15/01/2021 13:10

Yep, we've got a DFS sofa that will be 11 years old this year. The cushions are a little misshapen but comfortable, there is a rip in the fabric covering the base but it doesn't affect use, generally in pretty decent condition for their age

TheNationsFavourite · 15/01/2021 13:12

I think my M&S sofa is about 18 years old, a bit tatty but mostly because the dog is a bit heavy footed. Still as comfy.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 15/01/2021 13:12

Yes, our current one is from from Barker and Stonehouse. We got rid of our previous one after a decade purely as we moved house and the size and shape didn't work. It was immaculate. It was from DFS iirc.

FoxyBadger · 15/01/2021 13:12

Our last sofa was from DFS and was 15 years old when we changed it last year.
We gave it to the British Heart Foundation and when they collected it, they commented on its excellent condition.
We paid for foam cushions and they were still in perfect shape.
It was a fabric sofa, hadn't faded and we had it cleaned regularly.
We had paid about £1200 for a sofa and chair 15 years ago so not ultra cheap but not that expensive.
Impressed by this we also got our new sofas from DFS, having looked at everything else.
They cost about £1800 but it's very obvious that they are not the same quality as the old one- should have got that recovered.

schmockdown · 15/01/2021 13:12

Yep my last sofa was from Next and lasted fifteen years. Current ones are M&S and faring well so far.

actiongirl1978 · 15/01/2021 13:12

We currently have loaf sofas 6 years old squishy and leather they are fine.

But I still regret not recovering the collins and Hayes sofas we bought for our first house together cost £3700 for two in the sale, but last 11years just looked faded. I LOVED those sofas

butterry · 15/01/2021 13:13

We had one from John Lewis, an Italian leather one that was amazing, still looked and felt brand new over ten years later- no sagging or stretching of the leather either. It was very expensive though, around 4k, the most we have ever spent on a piece of furniture! Unfortunately had to leave it when moving as it was too large for the new place.

pinkpixie83 · 15/01/2021 13:13

Mine is a sofa and arm chair from John Lewis, nearly 10 years old, and just about needs the base cushions replacing. The arms look a little warn, but then I have three children, with the eldest being 12 and the youngest 8, I've also had cats and have a dog in that time, so they've held up well.

TheMandalorian · 15/01/2021 13:14

We have some second hand M&S sofas we were given over 15 years ago. The structure and cushions are still firm and solid. The base fabric bit (the cushions sit on) is starting to sag a bit now but the sofas are still fine really. The fabric is a paisley dark blue which I didn't really like when we first got them but came back on trend for the last 5 years. They have survived 2 bouncy dc for 6years too. I am going to replace them when we move house this year but these will be relegated to a playroom or something. They are a bit battered on the edges now.
However, after over 15years who knows if m&s still produce the same quality.

ureterr1blemuriel · 15/01/2021 13:15

Yes, from M&S and they replaced ones from M&S which were still going strong after 10 years. We only sold on gumtree as we moved to a bigger house and needed bigger sofas. The foam is good quality and keeps its shape. I do plump up a bit last thing at night every day though which I think helps.

BunnyBoilerRhian · 15/01/2021 13:16

We binnd our 22 yo Ducal suite 2 x sofas plus 1 arm chair 3 years ago.
We had never had the cushions replaced and they were still.ok tbh, but I always plump them before going to bed and turn them.once every few weeks and rotate them.with the "less popular" end of the sofa.
We shampooed the arms once a year and the cushions went in the washer a couple of times a year.
There was some fading after 20 years but to be honest it looked ok for its age. We got rid cos we'd moved and it was too large for our lounge and because after 22 years I wanted a change. We only binned it rather than sold due to the lack of fire safety due to its age.
We replaced it with m&s which after 3 years (bearing in mind its been used alot during 2020)is already showing some wear. It wasn't cheap either. It's still good but I reckon we'll get 7 or 8 years out of it but no way 22.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 15/01/2021 13:18

Our IKEA ektorp is 10.5 years old.
It has moved with us to five homes (moving between Germany and UK) It has spent two years in storage while we were further afield.

Structurally, it I solid. The cushions are in good nick. The covers were replaced after we retrieved it from storage, but had been throughally toddlers.

We are moving in to our own house shortly
The covefs may get replaced again... But the actual sofas habe a good few years left in them.

Rollergirl11 · 15/01/2021 13:18

We have a sofa that DH and I bought from Highly Sprung on Tottenham Court Road in 2003. It is not in our living room anymore as we bought a new one but it is still so so comfortable (more comfortable then it’s replacement!) It is a bit discoloured from the sun on the arms but the rest of it is still in very good nick.

StylishMummy · 15/01/2021 13:19

There's a tan leather Chesterfield in my family that's 20+ years old and only gets comfier

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 15/01/2021 13:19

We have a dark brown leather IKEA Stockholm sofa that's going on 10 years' old and still virtually as good as new. It's quite surprised me actually.

WeAllHaveWings · 15/01/2021 13:21

We have a SFS leather sofa which is 15 years old and needs changed, but mainly because of just 2 of the 5 seats which have been abused with our Labrador who has scratched it for too many years (a buff up with wax sorted scratch marks for years it but getting beyond that now) and the other seat which is one of the most used seats the internal support strap has recently gone so it is sagging (could maybe get that fixed 🤔).

When we bought it, it cost a fair bit more than the standard sofa's and it is huge, but iirc they explained the different types of leather and we went for the hardest wearing one with possible imperfections vs looks.

NaToth · 15/01/2021 13:21

Brown leather sofa and matching chair bought from DFS in 2006. Still absolutely fine. Only damage is where very elderly DCat lost his footing and dug his claws in.

Crocky · 15/01/2021 13:22

Our 15 year old leather settees still look as good as new. Can’t for the life of me remember where they came from though so not much help to you.

GreenTea70 · 15/01/2021 13:23

I have the same cream sofabed I bought in 1993 from The Reject Shop! It was pretty expensive back then as it had the bed and removable covers which I wash probably 2/3 times a year. It is a great comfy sofa - a little bit worn in places - I know whatever I replace it with just wont be the same and I will regret getting rid of it - I am moving home soon and know that it will look a bit 'tatty' in my new home, but I don't have the heart to get rid of it!
