do you have a sofa which you've used every day for 10+ years and is still in good condition

We want to stop buying "disposable" furniture which needs to go to landfill after 5 years. Sofas are the biggest culpret in more ways than one.

But do sofas which remain comfortable for decades exist? I understand, of course, thst they'd need restuffing or something...

If a sofa would really, genuinely, last a life time we do have money to spend on it, although we don't usually splash out. So if money were no object, what would you recommend?

Our is an SCS leather one that cost us over £3000 11 years ago, still really comfy despite two boys and a 6ft husband. The leather is worn in a couple of places but it doesn’t affect the sofa in any way. It’s a massive three seater and a two seater.

Therealone · 15/01/2021 15:29

Our halo leather sofas are now 16 years old, we gave them to a relative at ten years old. They still look nice.

Therealone · 15/01/2021 15:30

Our sofa.com ones are I've years old and look new.

Five years old!

Elphame · 15/01/2021 15:31

Mine is now 30 years old and still going strong although it needs to be recovered but it's only the seat cushions that have worn. The rest looks like new

It was made by a local craftsman to my design and my measurements and is so heavy that it takes 4 people to lift it as it has a solid hardwood frame. It has proved indestructible though and has had heavy wear.

GoudaGirl · 15/01/2021 15:32

2 sofas 20 years old from Multi York- had them reupholstered at 14 years (although really only the cushions needed it.) Didn't want to throw them out. I bought them as ex shop display for 2K in 1997 with a matching armchair (am about to re-do the cushions on that and recover it myself)
It cost me as much to re-upholster them as the original cost almost but I hated the thought of getting rid of them. Sadly Multi York went out of business a couple of years ago.

wow so many sofas from the main "highstreet" chains have lasted so many of you so long! Yet others from the same shops have been the opposite... Hard to know how to work out what's going to last!

Our sofa is seven years old and cost just over 1000€ and isn't in good enough condition to even give away free. The fabric is worn but that isn't the problem - the problem is that its sagging in various places. Broken, essentially. We keep talking about replacing it, but can't decide what to replace it with and feel bad about the enormous thing going to landfill.

We have two teens and a preteen, none of whom have read the being a teenager manual - they all spend most of their free indoor time on the sofa. I guess our sofa is heavily used, and we've had it since the kids were smaller and bouncy/ prone to doing headstands and forward rolls on the sofa...

I'm going to pick through the thread more carefully and see if I can find any patterns...

All my living room furniture is reupholstered 1950s and 1960s stuff. 1960s Guy Rogers sofa and 1950s Italian armchairs done 8 years ago and still look great. Will redo when necessary but I don't think it will be any time soon. They used to build furniture to last.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 15/01/2021 15:41

Elphame that's what I want!

M&S sofa from about 15 years ago still going strong. M&S sofa from 4 years ago was replaced at their cost within the 1st year due to deterioration. The replacement is also in awful condition. I wouldn’t buy from M&S again.

CarolEffingBaskin · 15/01/2021 15:43

Mine is 9 years old, but it's still like the day we bought it, so I have no reason to think it won't last another year. Or, indeed, another 9 years. It came from IKEA and we have 4 children so we're not exactly light on furniture use.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 15/01/2021 15:44

Hardwood frame and feather filled- is that the secret?

Not Argos!

My grandparents had an Argos sofa that lasted over 25 years. It's was so comfortable too! We recently got Argos sofas and I'm so disappointed. Not very comfortable, cushions out of shape, small tear on one corner. They weren't the cheapest option either!

ImpossibleGirl · 15/01/2021 15:50

We have a nabru corner sofa with pullout bed that was given to us second hand 9-10 years ago, so it's probably close to 15 years old now. Super comfy still - is fallen asleep on by one of us pretty much every night.

We had the covers replaced about 5 years ago when we redecorated the room. Still looks brand new.

SmaugMum · 15/01/2021 15:52

I bought my chocolate brown aniline leather sofa from Collins & Hayes @ Selfridges in 1998. It cost about £2,500 in the sale and has survived literally hordes of foster and child-minded children, as well as my own family. It still looks fantastic and is comfy and in great condition (I nurture it with leather conditioner as and when I remember). I’m in my early 50s now and I really can’t envisage that I will have to replace my sofa in my lifetime.

oneglassandpuzzled · 15/01/2021 15:53

I have a John Lewis sofa from 25 years ago and a Habitat one from 32 years ago. Both recently upholstered.

Tangledtresses · 15/01/2021 15:53

I bought a sofa from sofa work shop 15 years ago

It had feather cushions

And removable washable covers

I only just got rid of it, I loved it and it was comfy but it needed another set of covers and new cushions, as there's only so much a sofa can take after 2 children

It was so expensive to do this I just bought a new sofa and arm chair from IKEA

GwendolineWindowlene · 15/01/2021 15:54

We have two sofa workshop ones which are about 15 years old. We’ve been considering replacing them but the cost is so high I think we’re going to go for refurbishing instead.

NastyBlouse · 15/01/2021 15:59

Our big sofa is from Heal's. It's a leather chesterfield (not sure they do them any more, not leather anyway). It was a few thousand, I can't remember exactly. Maybe three grand-ish?

It's about 12 years old. It's just getting to the point where we probably need to have the leather cleaned, and maybe one of the seat pads re-stuffed. Other than that you'd think it was new. It will last decades more.

@Blue5238 I love the sound of your mid-century stuff. My absolute favourite design style!

OHolyTights · 15/01/2021 15:59

One large sofa so old I can't remember where it came from. It survived in fantastic condition - until the DC came along. Now it is covered with a washable throw and for the pets to lounge and snooze on. Rather than them going to landfill, we have had tatty old sofas and chairs happily rehomed by friends with dogs and cats and by dog and cat sanctuaries/fosterers. If it is fire safe, we have also found you can advertise free to good home for collection or contact homeless/resettlement charities if still in a reasonable condition - useful for someone without any sofa at all or much of a chance of buying one.

CatChant · 15/01/2021 16:05

We have two Ligne Roset sofas which are about 15 years old, and still look good and are comfortable.

I remember saying after we got them that it had not been the smartest move, given that within a year of their arrival we had a new baby and two new kittens.

But they've survived various accidents and have always cleaned up very easily with a gentle scrub from a damp cloth.

They are feather-light too. Whenever we've moved house the furniture removers exclaimed at how easy they are to lift.

WeatherwaxOn · 15/01/2021 16:07

I have a sofa bought from Allders around 20 years ago. The support is just starting to go beneath the main cushions, but other than that it just looks a little worn.

Doodlebug5 · 15/01/2021 16:11

8 year old SCS sofa. Looks pretty similiar to when bought brand new. The only bit that you notice is starting to go is on the leg rest of the recliner. Its not so padded now.
Paid £2.5k for it... best investment for hs

OHolyTights · 15/01/2021 16:13

A friend recently complained about the cost of reupholstering her sofa, but as she was the first one to do it and it is mid 1800s in age, I told her she was being unreasonable!

Mintjulia · 15/01/2021 16:20

I have two sofas bought from Multiyork in 2002 that are still as new. They have removable covers, of which 1 set has been dry cleaned.
One sofa has a creaky spring but otherwise, still perfect Smile
