do you have a sofa which you've used every day for 10+ years and is still in good condition

We want to stop buying "disposable" furniture which needs to go to landfill after 5 years. Sofas are the biggest culpret in more ways than one.

But do sofas which remain comfortable for decades exist? I understand, of course, thst they'd need restuffing or something...

If a sofa would really, genuinely, last a life time we do have money to spend on it, although we don't usually splash out. So if money were no object, what would you recommend?

M&S as well. Got them in one of their 20% off sales and are still so comfortable. Any stain seems to disappear with a bit of water.

Oldraver · 15/01/2021 13:27

I have an Oxblood leather sofa from DFS, bought in 2007. It's still comfortable the leather could do with a revamp in places but it just looks worn in

Poutintrout · 15/01/2021 13:29

Ours is DFS and has lasted 12 plus years. Granted it hasn't been subjected to children but it has had to suffer a husband who launches himself into it and two dogs that were very partial to a snuggle on it.

Had ours from scs they are 15 years and counting plump the cushions and they are like new. We now have toddler DS so I'm not sure they will last another 15 Grin

TrickyD · 15/01/2021 13:36

We have a leather sofa in the sitting room which came from Habitat at least 26 years ago. I love it, so comfortable and the leather is still perfect. It has happily survived kids, grandkids and cats.

peaceanddove · 15/01/2021 13:45

Tetrad sofas. They're bomb proof.

Gailhugger · 15/01/2021 13:50

Duresta. 15 years and look like new although they are a very classic design in a plain fabric so not likely to go in and out of fashion. I have no intention of replacing them in the next 10 bar a major accident.

IamEarthymama · 15/01/2021 13:52

I feel a bit of a pleb for coming on with my story as ours were from Argos, buy one get one free, £500 for 2 2 seater tan leather sofas 15 years ago.
I was a childminder and have 6 grandchildren so they have seen a LOT of wear and tear!, as you can imagine.
They have been everything from pirate ships to space rockets, trains, planes and buses. 😊
In addition I have been ill in recent years and had to rest lots.

I always use Leather Silk on them after wiping with a damp cloth.

We were talking about replacing them recently but as we have a 10 month old dog it seems pointless.
I did think about getting the cushions refilled as they are somewhat flattened by years of (ab)use.

I love the jewel coloured velvet sofas that are so popular but they are used to furnish my fantasy Lotto win house 😊

lifeinlimbo2020 · 15/01/2021 13:55

I have had my DFS one for ten plus years but it was more expensive than most of them and we had to wait as it was made in Italy. It still looks great and is still really comfortable. I also bought a three person Stressless settee second hand as we moved house and had a much bigger lounge. That is amazing too but they are thousands and thousands for a set.

AnonymousAuroch · 15/01/2021 13:56

We have a 15 year old sofa from DFS that still looks great. But then some friends of ours bought a sofa from DFS and it was literally falling apart (the frame, not just the fabric) after about four years. I don't know why ours has held up for so long, or if they maybe just got a lemon.

BarryGlendenning · 15/01/2021 13:59

Had an M&S one which lasted years and also one from Arighi Bianchi which seems indestructible.

JanewaysBun · 15/01/2021 14:01

Another vote for DFS
My parents had a sofa for 30 years then changed it for furniture village which is shit!

Dilbertian · 15/01/2021 14:02

I have a leather Furniture Village one that is over 10 years old and still as good as new. Firm in the right places, soft in the right places, plump and comfortable. There is one place where the leather could probably do with a bit of conditioner rubbed into it.

We have another, a Relyon sofa bed, that is 20 years old. Also still in excellent condition, firm, soft, plump, comfortable, as above. It's cotton covered, so we've always had a big throw on it. The arms are showing a bit of bleaching and slight marking where they haven't been covered by the throw, but the fabric itself shows no sign of wearing out. The back cushions are distorted because they really ought to be pumped up more often than we do. The bed is not used very often, anything from several times a year to not for 2-3 years (thanks, Covid). It is still a good sofa bed, steady and comfortable.

The sofas are positioned in an L shape. This means that the end seat of each sofa on the inside corner of the L gets very heavy wear. So we swap the sofas around every few years to distribute the heaviest wear over both ends.

We've absolutely got our money's-worth from these two sofas.

starsinyourpies · 15/01/2021 14:04

Yes from sofa.com

Also have a John Lewis one previously belonging to my parents that must be 20 years old!

Kndg · 15/01/2021 14:09

DM has had her Chesterfield suite for over 15 years. It's vv comfy and looks better as it ages. It was rather expensive though.

glas14368 · 15/01/2021 14:09

We have a few sofas from Duresta (two in the living room and two in the kitchen) and all are like new even after heavy use - we usually eat on the kitchen sofas so make a mess too (yes, we do have a table, but you can't see the tv from there Grin)

We were told to look for hotel grade upholstery fabric which can withstand a lot of use and does not fade in the sun.

I would highly recommend them - made in UK - and would buy from them again.

AKissAndASmile · 15/01/2021 14:13

Surprised at so many DFS fans here. Our DFS sofa didn't last and when we tried to claim on the insurance policy they said they had changed the terms so we couldn't claim. And had still been taking our money every month. For this reason I will never buy from DFS again. Thieves Angry

BringPizza · 15/01/2021 14:17

Our brown leather M&S sofa is 14 yrs old and the front top edges of the seat cushions are slightly 'distressed' (kids and dog) but the rest is like new. We paid extra for memory foam type filling and it's still very comfortable. Weighs a flipping ton though.

Plonque · 15/01/2021 14:22

M&S Abbey range, bought the first piece 15yrs ago this year and then added two more in the following five years when we moved to a bigger place.
All still perfectly usable, the eldest sofa is sagging a bit and we bought one of those sofa support things for under the seat. Sorted it out.

SeraphinaDombegh · 15/01/2021 14:23

Our Next sofas are 14 years old and still in great condition - nice firm cushions, good support etc. I can see that pps have not had the same experience, but ours are fantastic and have survived two boisterous children!

AliMonkey · 15/01/2021 14:24

Yes. 25 years old and still comfy and looks good - bought from Lucas World of Furniture in Aylesbury. We redecorated our living room a couple of years ago so got new one for change of look but as old one still comfy we moved it into another room and is still sat on daily. Obviously comfort is key but still looking ok probably helped by the fabric having a slight pattern/texture so any marks not as obvious as on something plain. We did get professional sofa cleaner in about 10 years ago and the dirt coming out was amazing (and disgusting).

bengalcat · 15/01/2021 14:25

Bought a DFS sofa 12 years ago - still looking good despite animals in the house and a kid

hemhem · 15/01/2021 14:25

We got a brown leather sofa from Sofa Workshop in 2002 and uts still going strong. Survived many unexpected sleepovers in my DHs student days, and 2 bouncy kids. We also have a fabric sofa from Multiyork which we bought in 2011 but its really soft now and not very comfy anymore and I think will need replacing soon. Sadly I think both these companies went bust so I don't know where to start!

Marmite27 · 15/01/2021 14:28

Ours is from DFS, 10 years ago. It needs steam cleaning, but can’t get anyone to come and do it.

It’s still comfortable and in shape. I went for a tweedy charcoal fabric and foam cushions with the intention of finding one which endured.

My parents light coloured, fibre filled back set lasted about 2 years.

leafinthewind · 15/01/2021 14:30

Our SCS leather sofas still look good and are only now beginning to sag in the most used seats. We've had them maybe 18 years.
